I'm really looking to improve my photography, so advice, angles, colors, general composition, ANYTHING that you would have done differently when taking the shot woulf be appreciated. I'm lumping these together because they were all taken the same day.

1 - exposure...look how dark the ground is

2 - again, exposure

3 - boring, nothing for the eye to get a lock on

4 - see # 3

5 - might be interesting if the exposure was spot on, maybe try b/w on this one

6 - see # 3

I like the angles of no. 6 but the sky is over-exposed.

Oddly enough, that was the color of the sky. It started raining a few minutes after I took this picture. The whole time the clouds were this odd white, like a piece of copy paper. But I do see what you mean.

1) More cloud definition, but less sky in the shot itself..

2) " " , expose the ground more

3) Focus on the colored tile from an angle like this.. Its bland, not really focused on anything..

4) Maybe from a different angle to see the colored tiles on the hill. or is it tile? see, I can't tell..

5) What cmt9000 said..

6) The extreme light at the top and then the extreme dark at the bottom bother me.. may if it were dome from a different angle, maybe closer to the end of the hand-rail?

What camera are you shooting with? Are you using auto-settings?

shot 1 is the strongest, I think the exposure is fine.

The rest of them are pretty snap shot like. Taken with the crappy 4:3 ratio.

Also, not a very inspiring place.

What does that mean, exactly? How would I change it and what would you recommend changing it to?

I'm shooting with a little Minolta something or other. It's my ex-boyfriend's camera (I need to give it back soon), so I don't know much about it. Not that I know much about cameras anyway. I am using auto-settings, save for adjusting... er, distance? It has settings for close-up shots and far-away shots (yes, you may pummell me for my lack of knowledge of terms), and I adjust that... and that's about it. I'm not too good about adjusting settings on digital cameras. I prefer film, but I'm trying to learn more about taking pictures and carrying around a clipboard with notes about each shot and then waiting a few days for my film to be developed is a slow, annoying, expensive process.

Oh, I won't pummel you!! I didn't know a whole lot about the manual settings on mine till about a month ago, and I've had the thing for 2 years.. and yeah, film is expensive to process, and then if they fuck it up during processing, it's frustrating. Just keep working at the digital, and play around with manual settings. It won't take long to get the feel of it!

Everybody has to start somewhere and these are not that bad for some first shots. Everyone has already pointed out what would have made these better so repeat what they have said is pointless. I have been shooting digital for about 3 months and I suck at it. Like others told me...practice, practice, practice. It will come with time. The manual for the camera will give ideas on the different settings to get you close to the ball park.

Or perhaps at sunset or sunrise.

The following sentence is false. The preceding sentence is true.
