A request from a first time traveller to Europe

Greetings to everyone across the pond!

I’m planning a trip spanning several countries and I was hoping that someone might be able to provide some assistance and advice for an inexperienced traveler such as myself on my first trip to Europe. Along with the usual tourist attractions I hope to do some exploring while I’m there. I don’t have everything planned just yet but I’m hoping to travel to Holland (Amsterdam, Rotterdam areas), Belgium (Brussels, Antwerpen), Germany (Dusseldorf), Luxembourg (Luxembourg), and France (Paris). If anyone in these areas would be willing to hang out with a Texas Urban Explorer and maybe visit some of your lesser known attractions I would be most gracious for your companionship.

My mother has a cousin in Rotterdam and I hope to make this my base of operations while in Europe and travel to the different destinations above from there. I will be over there for about 2 weeks some time in May.

I don’t know how important this might be but, while I would love to, I don’t know any of these country’s languages enough to hold a conversation and I don’t think I will have enough time to learn enough of all of them before my trip. I feel ignorant only knowing one language and only bits and pieces of others but I will be trying to learn as much as I can before I leave.

Anyways, if you would like to know anything about me just ask or check out my extremely outdated website here: http://suv.topcities.com

Thank you for any information you can provide me.

It's illegal to do Paris without the Catacombs

Sorry, can't really help you.

Antwerpen is supposed to have pretty huge shipyards though, right? Should be something around there, then...

And yeah, do the catacombs.

If you make it to Scotland, look us up!

Chris...

We all had ostriches. My dad had an ostrich farm! I remember one day someone came in and said the high altitude bombing of Kosovo had been a limited success, so we all went out and celebrated… by killing an ostrich and boiling it in kiwi fruit.

Thanks so far to everyone who's responded. Ever since I first started exploring I've wanted to see the catacombs so I'm definitely making that one of my primary goals.
Turbozutek, it doesn't look like I'm going to make it to Scotland this time around but I've got to make it to my ancestral home at some point in my life.

Anyone want to help me with my trip

Paris - Lisbon Portugal - Warsaw Poland - Budapest Hungary - Praha Czech Republic.

How easy is it to access the paris catacombs? Is it safe to do solo? Will I encounter any crack head bums?

Someone help me with my cinderella explorations

I wouldn't suggest doing the catacombs on your own. You might just get lost down there and not come back up. I have yet to go personally but from what I have gathered it is absolutely bloody massive.

Quite honestly, I don't even see how someone who never done the Catacombs before would even think for more than 1/2 second of doing them alone without any local help.

That would clearly be plain stupid.

I completely agree, it's way too easy to get lost there. NOT recommended.

A quick sidenote: The same thing applies to the coastal tunnels (over 100km) in Crimea (also used during wars). Many people have gone in exploring them and never came back. I would only go with a hired guide.

To the guy that started this thread: You can do very well with some basic words of german or french in central Europe, in eastern Europe it's good to know a couple of words of russian as most of the languages are related and many of the countries were invaded by the Soviet union for such a long time that a whole generation can speak russian. In south Europe it's good to know Spanish/Italian. In the scandinavic countries (Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark) you can do very well with plain english. Generally people speak english quite well in europe, but the further you go east or south - be prepared to learn a couple of words to smoothen your journey.
