(title said in my best "Bad Idea Jeans" voice... some of you are bound to know what I'm talking about)

Anyway.. I thought it was damn well time that I give this whole "draining" thing a try. I hear all the kids are doing it these days. Of course, I had to come to this realization in friggin January... but we don't choose when the muse visits us.

So.. having never done a drain before (I have an idea as to which one I'll try first .. say, there's an experienced Toronto drainer who wants to go, send me a PM)... and given that winter has now set in, any advice you can partake on a drainoob?

One of those things best learned by doing. Not that reading the Approach to Draining as written by <Predator> could be harmful: http://dsankt.com/uploads/approach.txt

Drains can get monotonous, so having a good way to cover a long distance is nice. Plus, it's easier to lean on your handlebars than to stoop when the ceiling gets low. Keeps the feet drier too.

It seemed like a good idea at the time...

I haven't found that winter makes a big difference when draining, at least not in the way that would make them any more hazardous than in the summer. They're warmer inside and the outfalls are often easier to get to. Only time I've found winter to be an issue is if you have to get a manhole cover when it's frozen in place to the ground.

Which one were you planning on doing?

Bring multiple flashlights, with fresh batteries. And spare batteries. And kneepads. And wear clothes you don't care about.

I personally don't wear waders or hip boots when draining, but I DO keep a dry pair of shoes back in the truck.

Unless you're planning on crawling through a 3.5 foot high Virginian drains, then you probably don't need to bother with kneepads.

Unless your tall. But they can be very useful, like a flashlight.

Any time is a good time to start on the drains, it's summer over here in Australia so we are getting perfect weather for it at the moment.

Only thing that changes in winter is “if there is rain no drains” some times it can get dangerous with flash flooding and so on and before you know it your bang in trouble.
Don’t need anything special to do it just boots and a light.
It’s great fun and it seems the more you do the more you enjoy it, lots of stuff to see as well including junkies, wildlife and some very impressive art work.

Like I said good fun but stay safe.

you might want good(industrial or whatever it's called) gloves too if it gets small at parts or is small because if you have to crawl through something they come in handy

and I needed kneepads because the ones I went in were short like 3.5 or 4 ft and i'm about 5'8" so stooping over was a bit difficult

I started reading it yesterday and im gonna keep going today. Ive only made it through the locating drains section and I've already learned a ton. This is definitely worth reading from what I can tell so far.
