NEw photographer, new camera (sadly a really new camera ...)

After my son dropped and broke his digital camera ...

(see http://www.uer.ca/...d=1&threadid=39395
and remember to wear the wriststrap while filming your own fireworks experiments - yes, hands DO get very slippery from inserting fireworks into rotten bananas)

... we used a 50-50 deal of his pocket money an my hard earned cash to buy a new one. He's quite enthousiastic about UE-photography and I want to support good habits.

We bought a Kodak Easy Share C643, and yesterday evening we took it through a night photography session. With 2-4 seconds of exposure time and a tripod it makes very acceptable pictures.

For some reason the night pictures turn out best in BW - why should that be the case? Pictures 1, 2 and 3 are more or less as they came out of the camera. The others have been heavily enhanced using just Irfanview.

We think that for a low budget amateur camera the results are not bad at all.

I agree with you. For such a camera as a Kodak Easy Share, these aren't bad at all. Numbers 3 and 4 are my favorite. The rest are a little bland, but I blame that on the camera, not the photographer.

The idea of fireworks and rotten bananas intrigues me. I will have to try that sometime soon.

Kodaks are good but the fact you have to use there software sucks.
So does not being able to use mass storage...

I use iPhoto with my mom's Kodak with no problem.

This isn't boot camp and you are not a ninja. But you sure look like an idiot in that outfit.

The old Kodak I had worked as a USB drive if you have the software installed. The first version of Easyshare was awesome, organizing, basic editing was so easy. The second version was totally worthless. They turned it into a usability nightmare. When browsing photos, in the place where the next arrow once was they decided to put the delete button. Disaster.

For short comings such as a lack of setting, and slow startup, the lens was good. I got some stunning macros and it was decent in low light conditions. Actually, the image quality was better on that 2 megapixel camera than many of today's entry level cameras.

My mom has a Kodak EasyShare and I hate it... It's hard to resize them if I forget to change the size setting on the camera because hers is a 7.1 megapixel, and they come out shite in photoshop when resized... I'm content with my 2 year old Canon. I think it's easier to use.
