| | | Mould in winter? < on 1/18/2007 8:05 PM >
| | | Yeah, somewhat of a rookie question, but does mould pose as much of a health hazard in winter as it does in summer? My friends and I are planning to check out an abandoned farm nearby that I know has a lot of mould inside and we don't have any respirators or breathing protection.

| | | Molds vary. I dont know what kind of mold that is, apparently, neither do you--if there is mold, I would get a respirator--they are not expensive, and certainly are worth the cost of a trip to the doctor and your peace of mind.

Hey now, I looked it up in the dictionary. Both spellings are acceptable. xP Thanks blacklines, I'll keep that in mind when we go.

| | | I've know someone personally that recently got sickness from mold and are still suffering through it. They weren't allergic and the mold in there house was very minimal. I'm sure it depends on the type of molds and the amounts concentrated in the areas you are going through, but I would get a respirator to be safe no matter what. You will probably end up using it sometime in the future anyways.

| | | please be patient with the hypochondriac in me... Is there a way to tell if you're having a reaction to mold or something or if you've just got a bad cold?
It's a tragedy. It's exactly like a greek tragedy. We should only be Greeks. |

| | | The short answer is probably not Long(er) answer is: even in houses that have LARGE mold problems, it often takes a long time to pinpoint why a person is getting sick, and usually that involves doing testing on the atmosphere of said structure. If you think there is mold (or an otherwise "compromised" atmosphere) present, wear a respirator... Its a cheap accessory, and in my humble opinion, one that is VERY worth the price--I consider it a neccessity--not because you'll wear it all or even most of the time, but in the situations where you should wear it, there is NO substitute. blacklines

| | | My boyfriend has visible mold in his room that he shares with his little brother. Point being his little brother got very sick. They ran a few tests and said he had exposure to black mold. Over time living/working in a room with black mold can kill you.(It was on Extreme Home Makeover) If you sleeping or spending every day in an abandonment with mold (even a little bit) get a respirator. If you explore say one a week in said place it might not be as bad.

Hey Journey! In my experience, being exposed to such nasties while exploring will give you cold-like symptoms for up to 24 hours afterwards, but it should clear up. If it lasts longer than that, you likely have a cold. If that lasts longer than 7 days, best to get to a doctor.

| | | While there is some truth to the notion that limited exposures to molds or toxins are ok as you are not receiving a constant dose of them, I think its bad advice to give. I believe this because it is not quantifiable in any way what "a little bit" is... Do you KNOW how saturated the atmosphere is with mold spores (or other nasties...)? Do you know what the reaction of an individual will be to a "little bit"? Of course not--to say that a little bit wont hurt you, while probably generally true, is quite irresponsible, in my opinon, especially to give that advice in a place where people who may not have experience/knowedge of these things come to find out more. No personal attack meant in this, just my opinion. blacklines

| | | I think there was an episode of house where a little kid got poisoned by some mold in an old house, though he'd only hung out there once. I wouldn't take any chances to be honest.

House has THE WORST MEDICINE ON TELEVISION. My mother works in a lab in a hospital and she can't watch the show anymore. It makes her brain hurt how disgustingly wrong the medicine is.
