trying some details

So i dont usually shoot details for some reason, and i really like what i have seen on here and want to start.

I believe that my photography is a collage of ideas taken from everything that i have seen in my world. And i use this site as a way of not only adding to my mental collage, but also using things to help change directions and start exploration on different levels.

Please let me know what you think about these shot, what is good/bad, what you would have done differently.

I really like these!!
1) I like the blurred floor, but might have gone a little more to the right to see the pipe that sticks out more.. That's what catches my eye...
2) The bright white is distracting to me... door is good though.
3) Almost too soft.. Makes me feel like I need to clean my contacts or something. Good subject though...
4) Good contrast and great subject, but still a little soft.

I think they're very good all in all though!

Thanks for the advice. but what you do you mean by soft in the 4th pic. do you mean soft in terms of subject, or fuzzy, or just a weak pic?

1 - Too much ground in the foreground. A little to give it a base to sit on is fine, but you're using too much of the frame with uninteresting stuff. This one has the best tonality of the group though: the objects look good.

2 - Good in many ways, with the problem being, again, that there is too much on the right side.

3 - When you're composing stuff like this, try to take into account it's "essence". If you look at Dobi's shots of pipes and electrical fittings and stuff they're composed very staight on with nice right angles and stuff, which accentuates the way the pipes are put together. I don't think that shooting them at an angle like this works as it doesn't bring out what is interesting about the pipes. This shot is also really underexposed. Look in to the levels tool.

4 - This shot doesn't thrill me, but it's very much on the right track. The composition is pretty straight and complete, the leading lines are good, the placement of objects in the frame is pretty good. Maybe zoom in a little more to lose some of the bottom and left sides, but leave the rest alone.

Are you shooting in B&W mode on your camera? It looks like you may be. Shoot color and convert to black and white after the fact because the B&W on these does not look all that great. They're very muddy in the midtones and such. Shoot color, and then look into using the channel mixer to convert to B&W.

Also, every digital photograph needs sharpening. Learn about Unsharp Mask.

Not bad!

Desmet, thank you so much for your input. technical advice really helps me. i seem to remember technical advice better when i am shooting a space rather then when people say ... work on your composition, or something like that...

i am going to look into the channel mixing and into the unsharp mask.

That's definitely more what you want to do. I'm not sure I like the odd aspect ratio for that shot, but that's definitely much closer to how you want it. You want to fill the frame with interest....a base is fine but make sure it's not taking up more than a little bit of the frame.

yeah i like it more too. i have been playing around with the unsharp mask alot lately, it is really amazing tool. but i can see how you can easily over do it.

The edited one is very nice... I'd still like to se the pipe on the right hand side.. I'm drawn there for some reason.. And i think I know why the 4th one looked 'soft' to me.. I needed to change my contacts!!! yeah... Stupid, I know... it doesnt look that way now with a fresh pair... I'm retarded, so excuse me... ^_~
