More HDR attempts

Got some more HDR photos for you guys to tear up. I'm not really happy with them, but I feel like there's a little improvement over the ones I've been trying.

Firstly, two of the tower on an overcast day. The first photo was made from 3 photos at +-2EV. It's okay, except the clouds ended up really washed out. And for whatever reason, it put in this really light area to the right of the tower that is NOT present in any of the originals. Why is it doing that? The only way I was able to remove it in Photomatix was if I just totally washed out the sky.

I tried it again with only the highlight and shadow photos I took for the above photo. This ended up with a grainier (but more detailed) cloud cover, but it STILL put that light area in to the right of the tower. Why is it doing that? I swear it wasn't any lighter in the originals. In some of the test ones I did, it was putting that light patch to the right of the telephone poles as well!

And here's one I attempted last night. I'm not totally unhappy with it, but I think it would've been better if I'd gone with a higher exposure on my highlights. I think it would've brought out the sky and buildings more.

Yeah, it was raining and I was trying to hurry so I didn't get hassled by security. Got some water on the lens.

Hey W.R. i think that these are a good start, especially the night scene. Maybe it is because the whole HDR thing is totally new to me, but i think it is very interesting when done correctly. and i believe that the night shot is well on its way...

Yeah. I want to go back when it's warmer and do it better. I was on the roof of a 16 story building freezing my ass off and I had only a broken tripod.

Really, though, does anyone know why it put that light patch to the right of the building in both pictures of the tower? I swear it's not there in the originals. Something about the HDR process kept doing it.

I hate the Photomatix glow. Try turning down the strength, smoothing high, and then dumping that program altogether and do it by hand in photoshop.

Try reading this...bsidez does the best HDR i think, and this group has some great examples.

using photomatix is only a good idea when u have certain qualities in your image (such as dust, grit, interesting light and shadows, brick/stone,etc). DO not use it for faces, or photos which do not originally have interesting and substancial highlights/shadows.

Infact using highlights and shows tool is a great thing to learn. Eventually u get to the point where u cant tell what is HDR or not.

That gets rid of the glow to the right of the tower, but it also washes out the clouds :/

Not sure what you meant. Is that the Photoshop plugin?

Yeah, you're right there.

I still don't get why it wants to put a big light patch to the right of the tower, though.

Its just a side-effect of HDR-ing stuff. It happens to a lot of otherwise good photographs. I'm not really sure what exactly causes the halo effect, because sometimes it is there, sometimes it is not.

One thing you might try is adjusting the tone mapping settings to get rid of the halo in Photomatix. This will probably make the image as a whole look like ass, but then save it and take it into Photoshop and see if you can breathe a little life back into it. Just a thought.

Pirate.
