The Galapagos Islands

I've just returned from my trip to the Galapagos Islands, which collectively make up a province of Ecuador. They're roughly 1000 km off of the Western coast of South America, and are the most humanly untouched place in the world. It was an absolutely explosive experience, I would do it again in a heartbeat.

If the moderators feel that this does not classify as "exploration", (which I think in every respect it does,) then they can feel free to move and/or delete this post.

Merry Christmas everyone.

Number 12 is great! You are so lucky. I am kind of shocked they let you take a shot in the plane.

Funny story involving that iguana.

Down there it's Iguana mating season right now, so the male iguanas are attracted to things that are yellow, red and orange.

That day we were visiting the island and we had a surplus amount of time. So, I curled up on the rocks and drifted off to sleep - wearing a yellow/red/orange Pantera teeshirt.
I wake up about half an hour later to this big scaley thing humping my stomach, bobbing his head with his tongue out and spitting salt from his nose.

This must have been such an awesome vacation! If you don't mind me asking what was the extensiveness of your trip and what a trip like this might cost someone. Also from what I remember reading somewhere the tours are very strict on touching animals and any of the wildlife, correct?

and that is the indifference of good men.

The trip itself, including flights and all other expenses, came to about $9,000 per person. My grandfather paid for all 9 of us to go, including taking us out to expensive dinners when we were on the mainland and buying us Christmas presents.

The tours do have a very strict policy on humans touching animals, but the loophole is that if the animals touch you, it's okay. The wildlife there seemed to have a strange fascination with either chasing me, (like the sharks,) cuddling up against me, (like sea lions,) or raping my shirt, (like the iguana.)

We were given an opportunity every day to snorkel and swim with the marine wildlife. I have pictures on a disposable underwater camera of sea lions, sea turtles, sting rays, penguins, boobies, clown fish, star fish, sharks.. the list goes on! The penguins and sea lions are especially playful and will sometimes try to steal your snorkel or pull your bathing suit off of you, (I had the opportunity to experience this,) and the blue footed boobies have a habit of dive-bombing into the water straight in front of you.

The scariest encounter involved a two and a half metre long white tipped shark... I was swimming and a wave caught me and smashed me against some coral, and I ripped my elbow right open. I was bleeding, naturally, and I watched the blood rise in translucent curls towards the surface. I look below me, and there he was - an enormous (for their species of shark,) white tipped shark who had his snout pointed straight at me. My sister then swam up beside me, and I grabbed her and threw her away from me and motioned for her to swim - fast. Just then the shark darted upwards towards me but I managed to swim to the side and crawl up on a rock that jutted out above the surface. The shark continued to swim around the rock and I had to get the dinghy to come and get me.

It was absolutely terrifying!
