| | Mogadishu, Somalia < on 12/27/2006 3:14 AM >
| | | My supervisor, Jase is half Greek, half Somali and grew up in Mogadishu. He was on Google Maps on Christmas and Boxing day after our store manager faked a sickie at work making both of us had to come in. To cut to the chase we downloaded heaps of satellite imagery of Mogadishu. It is an amazing place full of abandonments. Just type in Mogadishu, Somalia into Google maps. When it brings up the default map zoom in to the second most detailed level. Pan down and to the right / south east side of the screen and you will see whole burnt out suburbs. The most burnt out suburbs are south of the centre of city. There is a big major road running east to west in the north of town with many trucks and cars on it. In the rest of town some times you really need to search for cars or trucks, probably indicating that no one lives in those areas. There is also a newer part of the city to the north east that is well populated. Tourists do go there, but the city is still very dangerous. Mogadishu university
Chinese built stadium and swimming pools.
Parliament building Office of the President
The old part of town and the cathedral
Burnt out Mogadishu suburbs are common
Notice how half the building on the left remains.
Imagine driving through that. This suburb has been around for a while and is a 'bad part of the city'
Where the first Black Hawk in the battle of Mogadishu crashed.
This circled yard is where the second Black Hawk in the battle of Mogadishu crashed.
Armed Forces street is one of the few major roads with significant traffic on it.
The old Mogadishu Coca Cola factory dominates the lower half of this picture. It has been taken over and a shanty village now has grown up inside of it. North of the plant an old transport yard holds the remains of old trucks. This area is unusual in having so many cars on the roads.
Mogadishu Airport. Jase thinks these might be the remains of US installed pre-fab baracks that were destroyed after they left. They were laid straight onto the concrete of the terminal apron.
A rare site, still working transport depots. Jase used to live in this area and worked in the depot on the far left. Note the shanty town in the middle.
He's not sure, but Jase thinks this may be the new Mogadishu university campus.
This is probably a street market with buses. You can barely make out the shadows of people on the street.
Stop staring at my tits! |

| | | its alluring to look at a city that is largely composed of abandoned buildings, but unfortunately, its somalia. abandonments can be dangerous enough as it is. i'll leave those places up to the locals until i feel comfortable visiting somalia or until my skin stops being white so i dont stick out like a sore thumb.

Wow, I'm not the least bit suprised, but this country is very politically unstable. If you remember the Movie Black Hawk Down -- it wasn't even filmed there, it was filmed on the other side of Africa in Morocco, because the film crew was unable to gain any security for permits and such. Pretty crazy when a film crew with money can't have a sense of security. And WTF is it with Google maps anyways -- they seem to work everywhere else except the states, canada and england... It looks like a miltary base, its organized in the same usual pattern. I bet those buildings all pointing at each other are barracks.

| | | Africa in general is FULL of sweet abandonments. Any former Soviet client state is overrun with the same disused campuses and bases. I doubt anything in Somalia is really abandoned in the true sense. . . .

| | | Well, those abandonments aren't quite as sweet if you think about why they are abandonments. Still, yes, that would be a great place to explore if people wouldn't kill you there...

Or more likely indicating that the people that live in those areas are too poor to own an automobile.

| | | I'd go to Somalia. I don't think the place is really more dangerous than any big US city, let's say Detroit. There's war there just as there are wars all over the world. Somalia has been a bit more politically stable in recent years and I wouldn't hesitate to go. Even if I'm white. It's not about the colour of your skin more than how you behave. Act like you belong, blend in, don't wear tourist clothes. Make friends with locals and talk to the people. That's all. Today, I would say that Russia is a lot more dangerous than Somalia. And I'd even go to Russia too. Check the DB - people have been to most of those places, it's nothing new...

| | | The Mog is dangerous. It is about the color of your skin. Many down there would take pride in killing you for being white. There is no way you can blend in, because you don't speak the language, don't have their clothes, have never lived their lives, and don't know how they behave. If anything, Somalia just got less politically stable, with increased tension from Muslim extremists and Ethiopian intervention. In my unenlightened opinion, anyway. And of course, you have been there in the past and have studied the geopolitical situation of the country.

bullshit, sorry. There are parts of melbourne (and im sure in other places)you dont go because you get fucked up for being white, you think somalians are going to be a bit more cheery? You run into a bunch of pissed off somalians in an abandoned building in an abandoned suburb and you are not gunna hand gesture your way out of getting at least majorly beat up. more likely killed. EDIT: realised youre female. a white woman in some foreign countrys to some people is a prize, like it or not you gunna be raped. unless you manage to 'act like you belong' [last edit 3/23/2007 12:24 PM by GIJOE - edited 1 times]

Gimme a break. My tits and the absence of a pair of balls between my legs doesn't make me more at risk than anybody else. For god sake people. Think a bit. Think about social engineering. Think. Perhaps I traveled too much or you haven't explored enough. Jumping a fence is NOT the only way in locations. Making friends with locals, staying with locals, talking the local language and being protected by the locals will get you everywhere. It's not about color or tits, it's about your attitude. Somalians are not worst or better than any other citizen in the world. They don't eat humans and they are not savages. Do you know any Somalians? Have you ever met any? They are the nicest people in the world. They are in conflict at home. So what? I'd much rahter live in Somalia than in some area of Detroit. Most of you talk about Somalians without EVER meeting any one or having been there. Grow up people.
