contruction worker

I posted earlier this week talking about how I was "back for more". I've done UE long ago, 20 or so more years ago and am anxious to get back. Just wanted all you people to know that I've gotten a lot of useful information by reading the forums. A lot of the tips talked about being "inconspicuous" and acting like you belong there. I just wanted to share something I did yesterday.

There is a abandoned store with attached house (also empty) I've been scouting for a couple weeks. My husband works for a construction company so I took his company truck, hard hat and tool belt. I parked right in front of the bldg and walked around it like I was a contractor. The company truck doesn't have a logo on it so he didn't care that I took it. Unfortunetly it was boarded up tighter than a drum and I couldn't access it.

Which leads me to this question: back in the day, I would find places far from any residential areas, etc and we would just tear the boards off the windows and climb in. Someone posted a forum note saying "its only b&e if you broke in to get it". Have I been out of the loop so long that there are better ways to access? My finds will be few if I have to limit them to buildings so far out that nobody will see or hear me tearing boards off! Course, security was nil back when I was doing this.

I like the contractor gig you pulled off. Creative.
Wanna step it up a bit? Give yourself a legit reason to be there. "I'm photographing the new building for a city news paper".

Pulling a board off a window could be considered breaking and entering.. Although stepping inside a window that once had a board on it, that you had nothing to do with the removal of, could also land you a B&E charge.

A safer, and less suspicious way of getting in is looking for loose boards. Then slipping past the boards. You have a less likely chance of your enterence being sealed as well.

Yeah, I considered the "photographer" angle, but though they may not see the camera and therefore approach me. Figured people would barely bat an eye seeing a contractor at an abandon site. Plus I want to give myself some originality points!

Loose boards would be great, but seems they may be few and hard to come by?? Would love any input anyone may have on easily accessibles in my area (MA). Want to start slow until I get a few more under my (tool) belt and my no fear badge! Also, if anyone in my area is interested in taking me along I'd be open to that.

Also want to thank the "veterans" for being informative and patient with our sometimes novice questions. We are, afterall, compromising our safety and opening ourselves up to legal ramifications. I'm sure we just all want to be well informed so that we can make good decisions with this "hobby".

It doesn't matter if people approach you. Infact, as a rookie, you want people to approach you so you can practice your bullshi-.. social engineering skills.

It's hard to explain what you are doing there, if you aren't the contractor company that is working on that project. It's much easier to explain that you are a free lance photographer for your local paper.

Believe me when I say my "bull$#t" skills are in order! I've worked for a law firm for 20 years. As a "contractor" I would have said I was just interested in maybe purchasing the property . . . . maybe I'll play the photographer next time. People say I could give Dr. Phil a run for his money, maybe I'll get a chance to try my bull out! Also competed in the National Track and Field championships so I'm not worried about a quick exit! LOL

Thanks for the imput

If your in a property that is sealed you most certainly are B&E. If the owner cares to have you charged, your BS skills will aid you in getting in deeper. The tool belt/tools will seal the deal. Cops don't like being lied to. A felony conviction is no joke; best to find abandoned buildings that aren't being maintained and aren't sealed. Keep it simple...and don't get so clever that it gets you caught.

Just when I thought I was out... they pulled me back in.

Ehh, from what I've heard, the moment you touch the building (like the door or the window) as you're entering is technically B&E. But from accounts of other explorers who have gotten caught, a simple trespassing charge is usually handed out. Depends on where you are and how you're behaving though, I'd assume.

If you want get the board off without making it look like someone just came around and took a crowbar to the thing, you might check to see if it has screws, and bring along a screwdriver. It might work with your contractor-look too!
