Draning Security...

Hey all...

Im a sort-of new UE'r and I am going to try draining. I know that around here there are alot of vacant lots waiting for construciton. Also, there are alot of entrances to storm drains and sewers. The sewers aren't hooked up to any houses yet. My question is: the sewers are fairley reacent, so could there be any security measures on them? I hope i don't sound stupid

I'd strongly recommend reading all of <predator>'s approach to draining. It's like the draining bible.

Sewers not yet used? That sounds like a pretty rare opportunity. Good luck!

I wouldn't think that the sewers themselves would have security, but the construction sites around them are sure to have some basic watch over them.

Good luck again, and please, even if you aren't a photographer, let's see some pictures, this could be interesting!

It seemed like a good idea at the time...

Some of the lots are still for sale, no construciton. Only a few (3-5) houses out there. I will get pictures, but they will have to be after christmas. My digital camera wont turn on and I am pretty sure i'm getting one for x-mas.

BTW, I am pretty sure you can't buy crowbars when your a minor, so would a pipe wrench work for a good drainkey?

EDIT TO ADD: They might have been used...but just rainwater from the streets. None now tho (all snow)

Drains are silly. Unless they are tubular so I can skate those bitches. Just kidding Go for your goals and if theres security just wait till hes not looking I doubt they will have someone patrolling in the drain lol.

I'm almost certain you CAN buy crowbars as a minor, you might have to goto a local hardware store instead of a home depot though...

In any case, a metal dowel works REALLY well (EASILY better than a crowbar). Make sure they it is steel... just goto the store and ask for metal dowels.

Assuming your covers have small, squarish holes in them like ours do, if you're really pressed you can also use a pair of needle-nosed pliers. Shove the nose through a hole then press the handles apart and lift.

The look on the guys face at the checkout when I bought 30 inch "gorilla bar" was priceless... I shouldn't think there are actually any laws about buying crowbars. And good luck with the draining! Sounds awsome!

I'm gonna go this weekend, but I dont know what to use to open it. I cant buy a crowbar before then, but needle-nose plyers would work. Should I bring a resperator with me?

Edit to Add: How much do crowbars usually cost (and I wont be able to bring any pics because my camera doesnt work)

I don't think a respirator would be necessary, this being brand new. I suppose it's possible that some chemicals used in the construction and manufacture could be present, but I doubt it. A hammer may work as a crow bar.

It seemed like a good idea at the time...

i've always thought if there was security around a drain, i still wouldnt expect them to have the walnuts to go racing after me into the drain...they may call police etc or hover about the enterance.... if u can learn about the enterances and exits for a site first is a good idea, even if u just plot the dirction u will be going....better to be prepared.....

generally, drains arent worth the cost of monitoring with security unless they lead into a more sensitive, active site

so drain on!

I lift the manhole covers here with my hands, including the ones with the two small square holes. If they are tight use the handles of some pliers. Put one handle in and then pull up...

If the drainage system is new, and only rainwater and snow has been in it, then I'd say no, there would be nothing in them to cause harm to you. You probably won't even smell anything.

Have faith only in those who you trust. And hold who you trust close to you for you have no idea when you will need them most.

I've never even heard of a drain with active security, passive security could include gates, fences and locks. But as long a no-one sees you drop down a manhole your good to go.

The main this is to make sure that they don't find the drain open; they could close it on you. My advice is to close the drain over so you can grip it and shove it out of the way but from the surface its hard to see open. Or you could have someone on the surface who closes it after you and opens it back up, you just need radios.
