go to court? for trespassing? highly unlikely. I got busted on a construction site last week and was ticketed $65. it is about as sever as a traffic ticket. Edit: I fail at grammar. sorry. [last edit 5/7/2007 6:48 AM by TrixieSparrow - edited 1 times]

it had to have been a heatbag location, or there must have been some circumstance or something that made it that bad.

| | | I love my Canadian friends, but I don't think it sinks in when I tell them that UE in the US has been serious shit since 9/11. You DON'T want to get caught anywhere... sensitive or not. If they want to send you to jail, they will plant shit and you'll be in jail: trial is just for show in 70% of all cases.

I'd like to hear the whole story, if you have more info. I hope more was going on than you let on.

Not really but I wasnt there so I cant tell the whole story but one side of it has already been posted in the South forum here http://www.uer.ca/...d=1&threadid=42435 (the o.p. guy got off light by comparison and by cooperating with time served and a buggered up memory card, while the two others with him didnt fair so well, you be the judge as to why) Bottom line kiddies: dont walk across open ground, and down the middle of a private road, in an active site, in broad daylight, then hide in the weeds after being spotted, that thread is almost a tutorial on what not to do!

| | | You make it sound as though pre-911 was some golden age for american urban exploration. The reality though is that people have been able to explore just as many (if not more) places and getting caught without bad things happening. Ok, so you might not want to think twice before exploring certain things. I don't think that's anything new though and while maybe the likelihood of getting caught has increased, I don't really think the penalties have. Unless you're brown.

| | | Glass is probably right bout them being more anal, but since you were a Canadian they woulda had ALOT of trouble putting you in jail for something like trespassing. And if they planted evidence major shit would go down. THey would have to deal with TWO governments no matter what they did. And if our government found anything indicating their dishonestly, THEIR government would be forced to prosecute them.

| | | You're missing the point of the Patriot Act and other fun legislation that the Bush administration has pushed through. As foreign national, it will be a million times easier for US authorities to lock your ass up...and they don't have to tell ANYONE that they have you. You don't get a phone call, you don't get a lawyer. They brand you a terror suspect, and you're basically convicted before the trial. They can even declare any evidence you may present in your favor to be classified information and therefor not able to be introduced at trial.
Please don't be stupid. It might piss me off so much that I have a seizure or something. I hate stupid people. |

| | | You guys better listen to Curious George. He has more run-ins with American cops than most people I know. Usuaully, they just tell him to leave. And while I'm certain that there are areas in NYC that you don't want to risk exploring in, the post-9/11 world has not fucked shit up one way or another for midwestern exploration. I've been busted in Chicago, with a whole police force surrounding the building I was exploring in. The cops came in with guns drawn on us. After realizing we were just harmless white boys with cameras, they became very friendly and let us go, without even running our names through the police computer! Sure, there are some places where cops will be dicks. I have a friend from Des Moines who got arrested for exploring an abandonment. But his punishment has been a year of unsupervised probation with all charges dropped if he keeps his nose clean for a year. It's a hassle for him, but it's not some big horrendous charge inflated by fears of terrorism. So yeah, it's bullshit to say the penalties for exploring are super uber steep here in the USA just because of 9/11. In reality, explorer life has gone on with no real changes.

Around here the cops usually wont go into the abandonments. so it is just a matter of finding a place to sit and have a nap till they leave. Sometimes they try to hide to make it look like they have left so you will come out.

| | | I haven't been busted... but then again I've only returned to active exploration recently. But I'd say the attitude of the police and how they'll treat you depends on locale. In St. Louis city where I live now, the cops really only seem to care about people who are raping, murdering, stealing, or involved in the manufacture or distribution of drugs. They don't waste their time, at least very often, pulling people over for minor traffic violations or even stuff like expired tags (my shitty car is currently not legal to drive, gonna have to fix that soon). To simplify, they've got bigger problems to worry about. I wouldn't want to do anything stupid in sight of them, but they aren't usually roaming around looking for smalltime troublemakers who really aren't doing any harm. But in the burbs I grew up in... different story. In Happy White Soccermom Land, they'll pull you over because your car is ugly, and give you a ticket because you didn't stop for a full 5 seconds at a stop sign. They will harass anyone who doesn't seem to live up to neighborhood standards in some way or another. I was harassed routinely for no good reason (honestly, and my car was always legal back then Why? Because the cops out there are bored, there are too many of them, and they're trying to fill up their quotas to fill the bank and the prosecutors want to have as many convictions under their belts as possible - to prove their mettle to the Soccer Moms in the next municipal election. These people will likely try to put you to death if for UE So the moral of the story is: you can read about laws, past situations, and gossip about what happens if you're caught all you want, but in the end it always comes down to each exact situation. I'll echo the sentiments someone posted earlier - just don't get caught

| | | I will have to echo mos6502 and the others on this thread. Don't get caught! Of the few trips I've been on I've only had some semi-cop trouble at one spot. So I don't really know that much. But at a brewery we were exploring a cop car was sitting down the street from us, and we could see him by "carefully" putting our heads out the window. I swear I saw him point in our direction and get back in his car, but nothing happened so I don't know. You also gotta wonder if cops really care that much, I'm sure it's a case by case deal though.

| | | I know of a rave promoter in St. Louis that likes to throw illegal parties in abandoned buildings, he's gotten busted doing that and walked away with a ticket. And, that's after being caught throwing a party. I think at least in St. Louis, the color of your skin goes a long way (sadly).

Rave eh? Always wanted to go to one of those Rly underground parties... Its like UE plus Rave. Always sound like fun. Well..until they get broken up. Dude. If he got busted whut happen to the sound equipment? That stuff ish really expensive... I knew a friend of the family who got caught doing a Lasershow with his own equipment, but the guy who hired him did not get the permit... he got all his equipment impounded... like this was rly expensive stuff... Due to an implication he lost like all of it... I feel sorry for the DJ, the promoter just sets it up. The DJ and the sound guys have the hard job... -R.e.t

| | | You know, I've never heard of anyone local getting their stuff taken by the cops. They usually just make you pack it up and get the hell out. I haven't been to a true underground party since 1999 or 2000, so I don't know how it works anymore if you get busted. But yea, it's really fun and extra exciting. Those kind of parties are popping up again throughout the midwest (at least).
