I have a friend in Jesus. Seriously, Jesus ate my friend. It was horrible.

| | | I'm currently scouting an ex-naval communications installation. (see US > California > Sonoma > Skaggs Island) It's currently set for demolition. The gate is about a quarter mile off a two lane divided highway. The gates are over a hill, so they're not visible from the highway. I can't decide where to park. It's not walking distance, and there aren't any other roads on the highway to park. I figured my options would be: 1) park on the highway, police and other officials may assume it is a disabled vehicle, 2) park outside the gates, and 3) park a short way down the road just off of the highway (closer to the highway than the gate). It's a fairly busy highway, and fairly narrow. It also passes through wetlands, so you can't go off the road more than maybe 10 feet. Any help would be appreciated. I'm trying to take as many precautions as I can, as security has been drastically increased lately.

| | | Around here, we have increasing numbers of what we affectionately call "funky churches". These are basically those churches that "set up shop" in old storefronts, offices, etc... There's usually a number of nicer cars in their lots, so no one looks twice when you park there. I recently found this site which gives some good examples:http://www.therefr.../funkychurch0.html [last edit 3/27/2007 5:11 AM by Yami Doki - edited 2 times]

| | | The best course of action would probably be to stash a bike near your point of interest, and use it to get to your thoroughly camouflaged car. A bike is especially good for abandoned buildings, since it can be easily decontaminated from asbestos or whatever.

| | | I usually park in a parking lot, cause even though there may be places closer, who is gonna call the cops on a car in a parking lot? The only place I've had trouble with is places at the end of roads. I parked on the side of a road near the site, sat there for a while waiting for a friend, and some guy started walking toward the car from the house I parked in front of. We didn't stay to chat, I just parked a few streets down. It's times like that that I wish i lived close to the site or brought a bike

| | | alot of times depending on the location, i'll moped there. Once near the location, i'll shut the motor off and pedal the rest of the way. when I have driven to places I usualy find street parking no more than a 1/4 away and walk it.

Everywhere is walking distance if you have the time. -Stephen Wright Also consider water. Kayaks are fun, good exercise, and (when not bright red or yellow) excellent incognito transportation if you're near water. Not sure how accurate the google map is in the spot you're referencing, but thought I'd throw it out there anyways.

| | | I roll in a 98 black S-10 lowrider. My UE buddy and I park a good distance away from the site to be explored to avoid suspicion, but then we walk there carrying camelbacks (and sometimes hip waders) so i dont know how suspicious we would look either way. I haven't gotten caught yet, so i guess it works.

| | | @Spidey, yeah, Karmann-Ghias are awesome. I was down in Tennessee (Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge) on vacation once and saw one for sale for $400, but of course it was too sudden notice, and we were in the Camry and not the Silverado with car trailer. And I usually like to park a couple blocks away, assuming it's in town. Off a highway or in a similarly rural area, that's a good question, actually...Haven't been to any sites like that. But way out in the country, simple abandoned houses or whatever, I just park in the driveway or a short distance down the road. I don't have an optimal UE vehicle as of yet...Just my '85 S10 seen in my avatar. My next vehicle I want to be a big 4X4 fullsize truck, so that may make some things easier.

| | | I usually try to park in front of a residents house that is a good distance away. They figure it is just random people, and anyone else driving by doesn't suspect a thing. I usually like to be 2 or 3 blocks away, and on a non-busy road.

| | | My car isnt the most UE friendly vehicle so I either try to go for the parking lot, or bicycle approach. One thing to watch out for is parking lots with signs saying that you cannot leave your vehicle there if you leave the store/shopping center/whatever it is. I never really thought much of those signs until I parked in a lot and went somewhere, came back and found a $30 ticket

| | | I know what you mean, 303. I was driving around town one day and saw a carload of my friends go through the intersection ahead of me and they waved for me to follow, we parked in the lot of an antique mall and they said they were going to the movies and invited me to come with, so I did, without thinking a thing of leaving my truck in the parking lot. Got back around 11 that night, pulled into the lot and got in my truck just as a towtruck drove by really slow and I looked up to see a sign that said "No parking after hours"....whoops.

| | | I usually ride a bike if its close. If theres no inconspicuous place to park, I bring a bike in my van and park far away and go for a bike ride. Though, I have just pulled over and parked on the side of roads pretty close to a few locations, and never had any trouble. Just some stares from passerbys.
