personally I wear my harness when we are out.. that way I don't have to screw around with getting it on later on if we end up needing it.. ropes in my buddies bag.. and we just use fig 8s... I had made a bad ass thread a while back about descending and ascending but apparently it got eaten.. if you have any specific questions feel free to send me a message..

Although I rarely resort to ropes and the like, if I know I am going to need a harness I usually wear it in. Other times I have made a swiss seat, or packed in a harness in rare rare occasions.

I think after a while you get tired of carrying the extra weight and leave most of that at home.

48 inch dynema sling and locking biner makes a decent seat for decending, 2 x 6mm prussicks help you get back up

Tying knots in the rope works well with larger ropes, but normal climbing ropes it's easier to learn how to lock off the rope with your feet.. It takes insanely less strength, therefore easier to get higher quicker..

I climb, but never bring my climbing stuff to explore. If you want to know a way to rappel down a rope without a harness, like you said, it's this:

-Have your rope tied to (or looped over) an anchor at the top.

-Face the anchor, put the rope between your legs.

-Bring the rope around your left thigh, then over your torso to your right shoulder.

-Throw the rope over your right shoulder, behind your back.

-Hold with your left hand. Left hand is now the break hand.

That way, your body provides friction, and your hand can easily control the descent. It'll tear up your clothes maybe though. And I wouldn't do this for a long rappel, like say over 60 feet. You really are better off with a swiss seat or harness.

It seemed like a good idea at the time...

I'm all for safety, at the very least I'd be using a sling harness and decender of some sorts... it's a hell of a lot faster. Dynamic climbing rope is easy to work with, but in harsh enviroments I'd be using 11mm static and something to protect the rope if it's going over an edge or a lip (peice of carpet or a pack or something)

Yea, it's not that hard to climb down or up a rope, but eh, I can't climb either way so I'd get a safety harness thing. >.>

What are you trying to say, I'm crazy?
When I went to your schools, I went to your churches,
I went to your institutional learning facilities?! So how can you say I'm crazy?!

You only need dynamic rope for applications where the rope moves when you move (lead climbing, top roping)

Any UE application is sure to be a standing rope set up (the rope is anchored and doesn't move, you move on the rope) Standing rope should always be static.

Check out the book On Rope for good standing rope technique.

I dug through and found the old post I made:
http://www.uer.ca/...rrpage=2&pp#post23
if it helps you, cool.. If not and you have any questions feel free to shoot me a message asking any specifics you have..
I'd always recommend getting the actual gear thats made for what you are doing, although theres many ways to get around it if need be it's not always recommended.. at the least learn how you 'should' do things before you shortcut it.. Also as said before if you are using the rope for ascending and rappeling use static line, it's especially nice when ascending because otherwise you'll start to bounce ALOT because of the stretch, and depending on what your anchored into that may turn out /very/ bad.. worst case you fall and die, best case you fall a few feet and you just land on yer ass (But the rope is down there with you now and yer stuck where ever you are...)

I Rarely forget a harness, but typically forget a rope. If I forget a rope, I just use slings and switch off clipping on. If you forget a harness, I suppose you can tie it around yourself, but that would be painfully. I work at a rock climbing place, and i saw a guy attempt at putting the ropes threw his jeans belt loops. He hung about 2 feet high and they ripped.

what a maroon (as bugs would say)

There is a way to go old school and tie the rope around yourself directly if you must. Use a bowline on a coil. It's not hard. Swiss seat does the job too, but it's not dynamic, so I wouldn't wan to do a big fall on one.

It seemed like a good idea at the time...
