| | | Posted by Dages Did you guys rappel down on 8's or grigri? I'm assuming you used regular ascenders to climb up or do you have a trick?
|
We used more of a caving set up, Petzl Stop, Croll and Basic hand ascender. Made more sense considering there was a chance that we may need to change over on rope should we run into any problems, of course a change over could be done if you were descending on a figure8 or Grgri, but the set up we had was the more efficient option. Man it was hella good fun! JD

| | | I'm gonna hit up the Ascender + GriGri method for a while... seems kinda easy and means one less piece of gear to carry. I'm sure i'll eventually pick up a croll as well for longer ascents. The grigri makes it simple to transfer from ascending to descending, but slows ascending as you have to pull the rope though at first. In the image below I'ma replace the pulley with a DMM revolver (i think) which serves two purposes: - prevents the rope from jumping out of the ascender at all - less weight than the pulley while smoothing the rope flow in/out of the grigri

| | | Stunning expedition, completely amazing write-up...and fabulous photos! Easily a contender for one of the best-ever UER posts. My three trips down through the valve chambers above the Ontario Power Company station absolutely pale in comparison to your epic excursion into the hydro tunnel bowels (although the experience gave me a little bit of perspective and atmospheric reference while reading your story). Hats off Dsankt and crew. Gargantuan gonads...without question.

| | | Excellent job fellas. For now I'm sworn to secrecy but I almost know exactly what feelings you had when you did this though my experience was much more modern. I'm all jittery now and if this was written in a book it would be one hell of a page turner.

I have changed my personal exploring ethics code. From now on it will be: "Take only aimed shots, leave only hobo corpses." Copper scrappers, meth heads and homeless beware. The Jonsered cometh among you, bringing fear and dread. |

| | | Niagara is a goddamn goldmine for rad shit that many never seemed to bother with (notable exceptions of course). Damn I can't wait to get back and see some more Plus I'm drawn to the shiny tourist trap yeeeeeeeeecccccccccchhhhhh. Now of course the question comes to mind... how much more stuff of this illness exists? There is a small (in comparison!) hydro ps near Cairns (about 1200km - 750mi) North of Brisbane at a lil place called Kuranda. It's in a big ass gorge, at the base of the waterfall. There is no sign it exists other than a tiny brown concrete block house concealed amongst the trees. The blockhouse leads right into the side of the gorge in which is cut a cavern to house the turbine hall. You can exit from the turbine hall and follow the inlet tunnels through a bigger rockblasted tunnel right up through the inside of the gorge to the weir at the top. Sure it's no confluence but it's rad. If I get around to doing the write up (it was like 3 years ago now) I'll post it up.

Quite true. The Niagara region is the junction point of many natural geologic features, combined with man-made projects (such as hydro) that make it a treasure trove for photographers. Not to forget it was also the place where Canada whooped some Yankee butt back in 1812 (yes, yes...with a little help from the Brits, we know...we know). But nonetheless... What I've always found remarkable about the area is the sheer amount of things to explore in a relatively small geographic area. Everything is a reasonably short drive from one to the next. Look me up if you ever get up to the area again Dsankt. I'd make the time to do some splorin' with ya'.

| | | It would have to be VERY cold for a long time for that to happen. I was always under the impression that moving water won't freeze. It would be cool to find more pictures like that.

| | | In that first photo, Niagara isn't actually frozen. What happened was there were ice flows up the river, and they blocked off almost all of the water to the falls. The people there are standing on the ground, not ice, and you can see that some water is still going over.
