Questions about general Urban Exploration

Hey guys,

My name is Andrew, I am 18 and I am from Morrison County, Minnesota. I am very interested in urban exploration but I can't say I have ever really truly "urbanely explored" before.

Ever since I can remember I have been obsessed with old places unused by people. I think the only time I have ever went into a building was when I was about 8 or 9 and me and some friends went into an old small 3-room house on the edge of town. Nothing was in there except garbage - no old relics or anything, just garbage.

As much as I want to do some UE'ing, I am about as much afraid to do it for several reasons..
- The floors of an old building could fall through
- The property could be privately owned (as most is) and I could get prosecuted
- There could be wild animals in them
- There could be other people inside without me knowing

Does anyone else here have these fears? How do you deal with them?
Have you ever been caught trespassing or got injured from an animal or by falling through or something?

Unfortunately there are no local UE groups near me (the closest I could find online was like 5 hours away.) I also have no friends interested in UE, I've mentioned "you should come check out this old abandoned church I found in the country" but they'd rather play video games and that other immature stuff.

So can anyone tell me what I can do to start UE'ing or give me any ideas or tips on what to do?

I know there are loads of abandoned 1800 and 1900's houses/farmhouses/barns/churches/commercial stores, etc. around here (even some old ghost towns with populations of like 20 that used to be much larger.) And I'm sad I have to miss out on them.

You could always start small then grow, like explore an abandoned house then to a small warehouse so forth, if you really enjoy it you will be surprised how far you will push yourself to do things.

Things like that don't bother me too much, but i have to admit running into and animal in an abandoned house would freak me out.

The only people ive run into while exploring are either other explorers or security. Although i've never had it happen to me, ive heard some homeless people can get violent if you disturb them.

To be honest, I'm MUCH more afraid of getting caught/prosecuted than injured/killed.

i agree, you can always conceal an injury from your parents, but a huge fine? thats a bit scarier.

but i used to have all those fears and just a general fear of the dark creepy places i was going into, but do some research into the place, scout it out, threaten to break one of your friends video games if they dont come, and just push yourself in.

once you get in, it becomes a lot more comfortable. (at least for me).

of course it sounds like you live in a rural community, whereas i live in a big city.

just get out there and try it. your not gonna be laying on your deathbed wishing that you had stayed inside contemplating it (unless of course your deathbed is in the building you are exploring).

I've fallen through a floor or two in my day... never gone all the way through, on one occasion there was rusted farming equipment forming a spike pit under me.. I've been lucky enough to know the floor was giving out before it actually did so I could prepare myself and catch myself.. It happens, mostly it happened when I wasn't being too carefull..
As for property.. someone owns everything.. thats just the way it is..
Most wild animals are more scared of you.. just don't corner them..
As for other people, it happens we were lookin through this one abandon house when 6 cars full of people pulled in and people piled out.. so I think there was like 3 of us and at least 20 of them.. so we slipped away because we didn't know what thier intentions were, but we figured they were goin to have a party, and we were pretty outnumbered... the glory about someone else being there is the majority of people don't try to be quite, they just roll in there talkin to people and crap..

Best I gotta say is shit happens.. if your interested just go.. I'd recommend finding another person to go alone with, but just go find some places that don't look too risky and work your way up.. Also keep in mind.. Fears are worthless.. Knowing your limits will save your ass though..

The first time I explored, I was more worried about getting caught than anything else. After awhile, that fear pretty much goes away. You know that there is a chance you may get caught, but your fear of being seriously punished for it tends to go away. The more you learn about the places you want to explore, the more it will put these fears at ease. Some places may be less cared about by authorities or property owners than others. Also, what helped me is seeing that other people have explored the same places that I had in mind to explore.

As far as getting hurt... I've never really worried about getting hurt. If it looks unstable to walk on... don't. If you go into a building and the second floor is burned or whatever, you probably shouldn't go up there. Just use common sense and listen to your gut. Explore places that you feel comfortable with and take someone along. I think going in pairs is probably one of the safest measures you can take. If for some reason you have to go alone, make sure someone knows where you're going before you go and take a cell phone with you. You never know what may happen and its always good for someone to know where you are going in case something happens.

Another helpful hint i learned today, is if you think people may be in the building, just listen for them. Today at NPDC we went into Building 1 and heard people talking, but we were halfway through, so we waited a minute. When we heard them talking about beer we continued. Of course they ended up being people surverying, probably for demolition, but they were nice, told us to leave that building and to be careful of the cops. If you think something might pose a serious threat., just turn around. You can come back at a better time, there's no reason to risk it if you're that nervous.

I think the risk of getting caught/injured it part of what makes it so fun in the first place. Obviously, getting hurt or caught isn't fun, but the possibility, the risk, makes my heart pick up a bit.

Practically, the risks of injury can be minimised in a number of ways. Think ahead, do your homework assess the possible risks you will be exposed to and then use the appropriate gear or change your behaviour to avoid the dangers. Take spare batteries for flashlights so you're not stumbling around in the dark. Know how you got in and how you're going to get out, let someone know where you're going and when to expect you back, take a cell phone etc.

Getting caught can be avoided if you're simply careful and patient. Do your recon and research properly, get satalite pictures off Google or some other mapping program so you understand the local geography. Don't wander around being noisier then you have to be, avoid using flashlights in the open or in areas visible from the outside. Most of all, trust the people you're going with.

In my experience, most of the people you meet exploring are either perfectly nice and often very interesting or really scared of you. A couple of times, people have just run away from my group for no aparant reason. Of course, err on the side of caution, if they look like crazy goths out to sacrifice small animals and smear blood on the ground, they probably are and you should probably stear clear of them. But if they're a couple of guys with maglites, hiking boots and rucksacks then they're most likely urban explorers like yourself.

Don't worry about people owning what you're exploring. Morally, why shouldn't you be there, it's not like they're doing anything with it.

- The floors of an old building could fall through

Hug the wall and go step by step. If you see unnatural depressions or warping, don't use the floor.

- The property could be privately owned (as most is) and I could get prosecuted

This isn't the most legal hobby in the world. Start, as I did, with rotting farmhouses in the middle of nowhere.

- There could be wild animals in them

Unusual, but bring mace if that makes you feel better.

- There could be other people inside without me knowing

Yell "Hello" before entering enclosed spaces.

well, what happened to me was the place i wanted to explore was unlocked and no one around, I wanted to go inside but I was scared because it ws too quiet. I went back the next day and the place was locked. Maybe you should just take a deep breath and take your chances because you might not get the chance again.

Drain, son!

-No-one ever fell through the floor of a drain
-It's public works, and it's not like they lock 'em up
-No animals that I'd worry about live in drains
-Drains make sucky homes for the homeless.

It seemed like a good idea at the time...
