I would recommend a simple Canon digital point and shoot. I use a Canon A430 which is just fine for documentary shooting. It's nice and small so I can whip it out and put it away fairly easily. The quality is very good (at least to me) if you can keep a steady hand or if you have a small tripod for use.

If you have experience with cameras and don't mind being more of a photographer than an explorer, investing in one of the more popular DSLR models from Canon or *shudder* Nikon would be a good idea. Much more of a hobbyist setup and would allow you to really get serious about your shoots. Obviously you're gonna lack the portability and durability of a simple P&S... but you can get into it a lot more with different lenses and accessories and stuff. I do know some people who do point and shoot with a DSLR, but I really wouldn't recommend just because I believe thats something more suited to a... less... expensive and fragile camera and equipment.

I'm gonna be straight up and say I'm just talking from personal experience here. I've only been shooting for 6 months, and most of what I know is learning from friends who are into the camera thing. Really this part is just a disclaimer so some elitist photo nerd doesn't stomp on me though..

As some of the others have already pointed out, your question was incredibly vague. The question isn’t necessarily what type of camera you should get, it’s what you want to get out of a camera, or for that matter, what you hope to get out of the photography itself. If you’re goal is to simply document your journeys, with little to no concern for any artistically redeeming factors, then you might just want to get a point and shoot model, such as the Canon Powershot.

However, if you have an interest in photography, or would like to make it an important aspect of your UE expeditions, the an SLR is a must in my opinion. Some amateurs will say that the amount of mega-pixels is the big shit with regards to image quality, but anyone with a clue would realize that this means fuck all compared to lens quality. (i.e. a 10 MP point and shoot would get raped by a 6 MP digital SLR.) Not only do SLR’s give you the opportunity to take advantage of lenses, by using superior, interchangeable lenses, but you also have the ability to utilize more advanced in camera functions. Now we come to whether or not you should get a film or digital based SLR. In this case I think the choice is clear; digital. For anything other than UE, I would probably say film based, because the immediate cost is cheaper and the images will be of better quality. But because UE often deals with tricky lighting and exposures, the instant gratification of digital is an asset. So, I would recommend one of Canon’s Digital Rebel SLR models.

The larger area of a DSLR sensor makes a night and day difference in noise level especially at higher ISO compared to a micro size sensor (1/2.5", 1/1.8" on a better day). If they have similar "megapixel" specs, it means the larger sensor has a larger area per pixel which reduces noise and increases dynamic range (the ratio of dark to bright it can resolve w/o going off the scale)

The Hasselblad is an excellent choice. But really would you bring a camera that's worth $100,000+ on an exploration?
