| | | Man, even in the Rookie Forum new people arent' safe! You have to make some basic decisions about what you are trying to do. Are you shooting for you or for publication in a magazine? Do you want to spend $1,000 on a top of the line camera? If not, look at some of the lower end Point and Shoot models. Basically, don't even look at anything with less than 3.2 megapixels. Most of your modern name brand digital point and shoot cameras (Nikon, Olympus, Canon, Fuji, Kodak, Sony etc.) will work just fine for the average starting photographer. Don't go overboard on your first one, just get one you can afford, and then go out and use it. After a few months of shooting with it, you will have a much better idea of what you really want in a camera. Good Luck!!!
I have changed my personal exploring ethics code. From now on it will be: "Take only aimed shots, leave only hobo corpses." Copper scrappers, meth heads and homeless beware. The Jonsered cometh among you, bringing fear and dread. |

You asked an exceptionally vague, open ended question that has been asked 100 times before and covered in depth. Surely you didn't expect an intelligent response to a question on a massive topic open to huge subjective opinion when you've given nothing to work with. Not that I feel obliged to assist you regardless... that's what gooooooooooooogle and the search function is for. If you had a specific technical question however...

The skill of the person behind the camera matters far more than the camera itself. I've seen amazing photos with a disposable camera, and I've seen horrible photos using a 5D.

| | | i prefer the cheapest disposable i can find. with no flash. that way all the pics equally stink. Really though, we are using a 5 year old Sony Cyber-Shot, 2.0 Meg. it works until she gets the canon or nikon she wants

| | | http://www.uer.ca/...urrpage=1&pp#post0 I took all these with a Canon A520 point and shoot. Decent quality for a relatively cheap camera.

I totally agree with this. Here is an example... Me = awesome The camera I use (sony cyber-shot 2.0) = not awesome. I took this picture with the cybershot 2.0 megapixel

| | | I use a canon 350d. The fun thing with this camera (and every slr/dslr) is that it's expandable. The flash isn't powerful enough? You buy a new one and stick it on the camera. Not enough zoom? You buy a lens with a longer focal length. My personal advice would be to go with Canon. If you cannot afford a dSLR, go with a S3 or a A-Series camera. Last but not least, don't go with a sony camera. They (sony AND the cameras) sucks! sucky lens, you HAVE to use a memorystick card, the camera are easy to break, there's about no technical support and they are overpriced.

| | | Sony is for people who don't want to go through the effort of finding out what a good camera is. Or stereo, or video, or headphones, etc... The only good thing by sony is the PSP and PS3.
