I'm doing a six page journal/research paper on a topic of my choice, & (obviously) I selected urban exploration. I need to establish a thesis, which requires me t take a position on the topic. What positions &/or points can I elaborate on for UE? Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

You could take the stance that Urban Exploration is in-fact a form of Historical Appreciation and can be used as a method of documenting and preserving the history of industrial, medical, and residential architecture.
Which when you think about it architecture is almost a sign post of the times, you can actually view the advancements we make in construction in the different abandonments we explore. For instance, buildings built during war time tend to demonstrate the use of super strong construction techniques, while peace time buildings utilize higher tech light weight building materials.

I hope this helps you out.

We are going to inherit the earth . There is not the slightest doubt about that. The bourgeoisie may blast and burn its own world before it finally leaves the stage of history. We Are not afraid of ruins. We who ploughed the prairies and built the cities can build again, only better next time. We carry a new world, here in our hearts. That world is growing this minute.

You could probally right a book on ethics.
you could cover the following

* abandoned sites
* active sites
* draining
* roofing
* vadding
* photography
* buildering

Im sure if you looked into it you could find way more

Also the reasons why and what kind of people are attracted to UE.

Trying to win hearts and minds, but willing to splatter them if neccesary.

I don't think "righting" a book on ethics will pass for a research paper. And she asked for a thesis

Good idea, take the side either for or against that UE is a form of historic preservation.

You can't fall off a mountain.

I was aiming for conservation to be my overall objective, but I never gave it enough thought. You've definitely provided me with inspiration, thanks!

I dunno how in depth you want this to be but something that has been bothering me is this.

A functionalist view of society says that deviants serve the functional purpose of illustrating the line between acceptable and unacceptable behavior in our society. 95% of the non-exploring community look at my photography and judge what I do as acceptable to society and therefore not deviant. However, breaking into abandoned buildings and not creating any sort of art from it and vandalizing the building would be considered deviant behavior by most.
I present you with the two following scenarios.
Both scenarios start out the same
I find an abandoned building, I pull off a board with a crowbar and smash though a window to get inside.
Scenario 1: I create photographic art from this building which is considered acceptable and beautiful.
Scenario 2: I walk around the building without breaking anything and just leave.

I propose that scenario 1 would not be seen as a deviant behavior by most however scenario 2 would be seen as a deviant behavior by most.

Does the creation of art inside this building truly move the line of socially acceptable and unacceptable behavior?

If so what other conclusions could we draw from this? What is the role of art in determining deviant behavior?

The world is not nearly as scary as the TV makes it out to be.

I really don't think the non-exploring community cares either way. We're talking about abandoned buildings after all. Most people just see them as eyesores and would like nothing more than to see them get demolished. Some people out there might see what we do as risky or possibly interesting on some level, but "unacceptable"? I kind of doubt it.
