I mean why would anyone build something like this anyway. Its obvious it was meant for living quarters why would you put a hearth in a root cellar or even a storm shelter? Weird shit.
Heres what I can tell you. Its dug back into the side of a rock hill. The brickwork is so old the mortar has dissolved away and then been replaced at least twice. At some point later in time the inside was coated with a thin layer of mortar (concrete) bricks were removed and electrical outlets installed and the wiring was mortared over as well. The chimney has been broken off at ground level and covered over, I couldnt get right on top of it due to the prickly pear all over the hill side.
Ever see a wiring job like this:
I just post this weird shit I find in case anyone cares to look...

Im at a loss to figure it out. No windows the only ventilation was the chimney, the hasp and lock couldve been added anytime to the outside of the door, maybe they kept their crazy little half brother in there so the town wouldnt find out about him !

| | | | Wow, great find! It reminds me of some of the Civil War era brick embrasures we have here in the San Francisco Bay area, & the little fireplace looks like some of the early 1900s concrete fortifications.
My semi-educated guess is that those electrical outlets are 1930s or 1940s era fixtures.
I think your best bet in learning more about the history of the structure would be to:
1. Try to trace where the electricity came from (try to find the remains of the power lines outside, & follow them).
2. Find & research other ruins or homes in the immediate vicinity.
3. Trace the ownership of the land.
4. Ask some local old-timers about the place, or at least show the photos to people at the local county history museum/society.
It looks old, but since we don't really know that it actually was constructed long, long ago, maybe it really was some 'bomb shelter' built at the start of the cold war by one or two families that lived in the area, using old bricks, etc? Is there any sort of major old military base in the vicinity? Some people out in the boonies built shelters just because they lived close to what they thought was going to be a major Soviet target in the event of a war. Back in the early days, there wasn't a lot of knowledge about radiation/fallout, so some shelters were built to provide blast protection only.

the bricks seem old as does the construction but its been patched repaired mortared over modified etc
theres two iron pipes run across the front about 2"od about 7.5' high that puzzled me dont seam to be for water could be they supported a storage loft
next time Im out that way I'll look closer it is a minor mystery for now
