|  | | | I went draining for the first time yesterday....and i have one question....do all drains contain sewage :s? the only one i can find that dont are only like 5' deep and its just a vert tube with 2 little pipes
connecting to it?? im just wondering if i have to get covered in crap to go draining?

Seriously though... read up on 'storm sewers' versus 'combined sewers' versus 'sanitary sewers'. Of coursed it may be that your town doesn't have any explorable drains, I don't know.

| | | | Everywhere I've lived, what's stamped on the manhole cover has no relationship with what's underneath. I've seen steam tunnel manholes with covers marked "telephone", "sanitary", and "storm". I've seen storm drains labeled as sanitary sewers, and vice versa. I think they just use whatever cover is at hand.

Any pics? Sometimes newbie drainers confuse stinky drains with actual sewers/CSOs. Some drains smell funky, but a true sewer is the stench from hell  CSO smell varies based on the ratio of creek water:sewage.

| | | | That depends on your location. In Puerto Rico, for instance some sewers are marked "Alcantarillado Sanitario" (Sanitary Sewer). And all the ones I've seen like that are actually sewers. However, the drains are often only marked "SEWER". Another thing is under who's jurisdiction each is. Here the sewers are handled by the Commonwealth, but the drains are Municipal, so I know when I see the initials "AAA" (standing for Authority of aqueducts and Sewers) its a sewer, not a drain. There's also the companies that the government hires for making manhole covers... Sometimes they are labeled in the cover. Down here it seems all the drain covers are made by PRASA, while the sewer ones are made by Fundición Cubano.
Of course an easier way is when you find them is to just look for rivers that have been built on. But for that you need to search the old maps and look for rivers that are no longer there.

| | | | Just look around for open ended drains in your neighboorhood until you find one large enough to go in. This is the easiest way to find storm drains. Or just pop manhole covers along the sides of the roads and see if they are big enough to go in. As long as you aren't in a old area (I mean really old) any drain that is open on the street (the little gutter for rain water to go in) will not be sewage. If you do happen to live in a really old area, then you can have CSO (combined sewage overflow) where when the sewers get too full it overflows into the storm drains, or the drain system is fully combined. I would NOT reccomend going into any drains with sewage. It's a great way to get killed. As for the manhole covers in my area all of them, including the sewage ones, say sewer district. I usually don't mess with drains that don't have gutterboxes open to the street, but if I have realized that in my area most but not all of the manholes for the sewers are much thicker and heavier than the ones for the storm drains.
To stay on the safe side just stick with open ended drains and drains that have open gutterboxes on the street.

(I’ve yet to go draining myself, but there is one manhole near where I live that I can tell is a sewer from 10 feet away) from what I’ve read elsewhere, the surest sign you are in a sanitary sewer is the contents, look out for tampons, toilet paper, and condoms.

Cheap and nasty inflatable boats/tubes are fine. Canoes may cause problems if the tunnel shrinks, turns sharply or you need to turn around. Plus they cannot be deflated for easy manhole exiting. Good when you're tide locked.
Also you canna lie down properly in a canoe and paddle.

thats true but I lived in an area where a storm overflowed the waste and sewage pipes into the storm drain pipes and they were all shoved into the bay, no one was allowed to swim in some beaches for about two years after it happened and even now youd never catch me in those waters, sure its illegal and sure its un-sanitary but since when has that ever stopped anyone
