Falling Through A Roof

Okay, so I need some advice on traversing fragile roof-tops. I'm not asking anybody to persuade me against crossing this roof-- I just want to know if anyone has had any experience with this, and how did they go about it.

Parts of the roof are caved in. Some areas have a little fire damage.

Are there tell tale signs I can expect just before the roof gives? Soggy planks, groaning boards, and what else?

Any life stories you can share would help a lot.

Thanks,
K

The only experience I've had, which is pretty obvious, is don't underestimate the "soft" areas (The soggy planks, etc). If you have the time, avoid stepping on anything that feels soft at all.

You just stated everything that any one else could say. I can't think of any reason to cross such roof. There is exploring and then there is just being stupid.

This isn't boot camp and you are not a ninja. But you sure look like an idiot in that outfit.

Stay close to a wall or to whatever the roof is anchored to.
I fell through a roof when I was a firefighter. . . bad news.
FDs have 'roof ladders' that they use to disperse their weight across the soft or failing surface.

if i were to attempt such a risky thing, i would want to spread my weight out over as much surface area as i can and would probably opt for a belly crawl.

also +1 on staying close to a structural wall and not cross through the center of the area.

that's good advice, you'd be closer to the wood that way too, and could hear the slight creaks and groans. I may use that technique.

Well sometimes you have to cross such things to get to the good stuff. Case in point, I have to climb up a three story natural gas pipe to get to one of the most beautiful buildings in the city of Winnipeg.

Anyways, there are two ways you can approach this. The first is to skirt around the edge of the roof where the walls meet the trusses. Secondly, if you can located the trusses, try to walk along their path as these are generally the strongest part of a decayed roof. I have employed both of these techniques numerous times and have yet to fall through a roof. Stairs are different matter though.

hey thanks man. I was beginning to believe that most of the people here are just pussies. I'll employ your advice, to be certain.

Like many here I have had things break loose on me and floors give way under me. Ha! You rejected the best advice right off the get go; don't, but you knew that.

You can look underneath were you intend to walk. Fire damage means water damage. All bets are off. When floors, roofs, etc. give way there is often no warning(aside from the sagging, but you knew that), baby they just go! So do you if your on it. You can try roping yourself off too, but the rope will do bad damage to you if it ends up breaking your fall without a belt or harness to evenly spread the force.

Just when I thought I was out... they pulled me back in.

Blackhawk's right, scout from below first. Stay over the beams, at least you have a better chance of racking your nuts and only falling part way. If you have a short section that is shorter than the fall, a well anchored rope and harness could help, if the fall is shorter than the length, you're pretty much going to hit anyway unless you have something overhead to clip into. spreading weight is a big key. People who like to bunch up on questionable roofs are asking for trouble, so send one guy at a time. Also the edges tend to be better than the middle, but that is just a guideline, weak walls or supports would make this less of a rule, but you exert is less leverage close to the support. Also if the wall is higher than the roof, you can lean on that and remove some weight from the roof. If you did break through you would be able to catch yourself if your arms are over the top. I would suggest a different approach if there is one, but like CG said sometimes you have to cross them to get to the good stuff, and that's a fact. But if you die don't call me.
