How to Detect Lies (aka what not to do when talking to authorities)

The following techniques to telling if someone is lying are often used by police, and security experts. This knowledge is also useful for managers, employers, and for anyone to use in everyday situations where telling the truth from a lie can help prevent you from being a victim of fraud/scams and other deceptions...

http://www.blifaloo.com/info/lies.php

Reverse-engineer the theory to perfect your lying technique when talking to authorities.

Some of it is common sense. IE: Guilty person gets defensive, innocent person gets offensive. When you're accused of something (trespassing) try "I have a right to be here." instead of "I didn't know." And you might get "Actually there are signs posted, here let me show you off the property." "Oh, I'm sorry." instead of "Like I haven't heard that one before. Spread your cheeks and lift your... (dave chappelle anyone?)".

Cheers.

Great idea, but shouldn't this be in Tutorials?

When someone in a *position of authority* cop/rent-a-cop approaches you, the last thing they want to hear is offensive behaviour. While this might seem like a sarcastic thread, some moron is gonna go try this.

I'd hate to encourage morons...

Yeah, it seems that most cops will let you off if you demonstrate that you are humble and penitent.

Sorta. I'd be penitent, but not a push-over.

It seemed like a good idea at the time...

Cops don't take kindly to in your face behavior, as it can escalate into a more violent form of expression. They know that.

Lies are easy to detect many times even in strangers. Avoid there use whenever possible. If the first thing that comes to your mind when encountering a cop is to lie, your already of the defensive, and losing. One of the best ways to piss someone off is to lie to their face. Many times the truth serves you better. Think before you put yourself dumb situation that's impossible to explain.

Stay calm, keep your hands in plain sight, make eye contact, don't raise your voice and let the cop talk first. Do what they sak promptly; most cops are OK if your not committing vandalism, B&E, etc and you don't act like a problem child or dangerous. Cops hate repeat calls, and people getting hurt.

Give an explantation with the minimum about of bs. Use half the truth rather than lies; sometimes the cop already knows what your doing and plays dumb. I done this with state cops before, they know, I know they know, but it's not that big of a deal and I'm not playing them for an ass. One that could have warned me not to trespass instead told me to next time leave him a note on my car saying I was coming back. He gave me a free pass to go back when I like! Most times if you treat them with respect, they return the favor.

Just when I thought I was out... they pulled me back in.

Good advice, but don't mumble and talk softly either. It makes you seem guilty, as if you are talking so quietly because you think you are in the wrong. Try to speak clearly, so as to be easily audible, but not in such a loud voice that you are yelling or sound hostile.

Ha-ha, no don't speak softly and carry a big wallet. Some people watch too much TV and think you have to scream to make a point(the screaming cunt syndrome). You have to feel out what you got, but you want to have a conversation, not an argument. In arguments cops usually win by default.

Chronos is right; being humble is better than acting arrogant, but being insincere can backfire. Best to be yourself and try putting yourself in the cop's (or whoever) shoes, now your starting to practice humility.

Definitely. But you don't want to stare at the ground and mumble so softly that the cop can't even hear what you're saying. That's all I meant.

There's no one good method that works in all situations, and yeah staring at ground or the cops chest is definitely what you don't want to do. All I meant was don't sound unduly agitated.

Well put. When I see someone acting like that or start with the ass kissing, I get that bad feeling I'm being lied to.

And blackhawk, Chronos and Air 33 made very good points.

1) Don't bother with the attitude
2) Make eye contact
3) When asked to leave, leave peaceably. And either get the owner's permission next time or find another place to explore.

I've had people come on the property when they weren't supposed to be there. There were several different reactions ranging from "Sorry about that" (while leaving) to "F**k you! I'll do whatever I want!". (That guy was carried out by the police in handcuffs when he tried to swing at the cop)

No need to be a push over or an ass kisser. Lots of ways to get out of the situation and keep your dignity intact.
