|  | | | I spotted this place one day when I was going somewhere. We went back to take a second look, and actually played on some of the playground equipment. This is how playgrounds looked when I was a kid. In fact, when I was a kid, we didn't have this plastic safety stuff like the playgrounds do now. It was all hardcore metal and if you fell, you got hurt. If you got hurt, you dusted yourself off and went right back to playing! Man, I miss those days! I could go into how much better life was back then, but instead I will just share the pictures I took of a forgotten playground.
This is actually a swing. I tried it. It still works quite well.
The seesaw still works too! (Or 'teetertotter' if you prefer.)
Normally, when you see these at parks, they're animals or something. This was the first time I'd seen one of these as a car...
Here is an animal one, but I'm not sure what kind of animal its suppose to be. Maybe they had worms that looked like this back then... who knows.

I loved the merry-go-round because of the element of danger involved--there was always the chance you might go flying off the thing thanks to centrifugal force. And the teeter-totters, except when you got stuck with the fat kid and just had to sit in the air with your feet dangling. Ah, memories.

| | | | There's a similar playground in Cockrell Hill (an island suburb on the working-class side of Dallas). It was definitely the kids' favorite when we lived in the area. Big, tall metal slide with no safety features, and a jungle gym high enough to bring on a trip to Children's Medical Center. The kids agreed -- playgrounds were more fun when they were dangerous.
Of course, as a parent, I'm quite happy that their school playgrounds are full of rounded edges, low heights, and soft landings. My worst playground memory was when a kid almost pushed me off the top of the big, tall metal slide, down to the asphalt surface about a mile below. I told the teacher, and she blew it off. Maybe progress has its place.
(Oh, and for the drainers... go upstream along the creek by that park and you'll find a nice little surprise...)

By which park.. this one? Or the one you mentioned in Dallas? Now you have my imagination going crazy. What is it upstream? An old alien spaceship? Old ancient greek ruins? WHAT?? TELL ME!

Thats exactly what I thought when I first found this place. Its really sad but I think its about to be torn out because they are building a house VERY close. We actually played on some of the equipment and I told my kids thats what playgrounds looked like when I was young. My five year old gave me a look that said, 'I feel sorry for you, mom...'

Yeah, that kind of dates us. No safety nets or all that stuff. But we all survived... with a couple more scars maybe. LOL

Nothing all that unusual, just a good, tall, mostly-dry three-bay square drain -- near(ish) to my park, not wherever yours is. No idea how far it goes, but it's long enough that you can't see any light from the other side when you go in without a flashlight. Didn't get to really try it out, because I had a bunch of kids who weren't quite ready for the light-free drain thing -- you know, go in until you can't see your hand in front of your face, wait for your eyes to adjust, then do it again. We don't need no steenking flashlights!

| | | | eeeeh the only reason this is cool is because we all remember the industrial style playground equipment made from pipe and sheet metal and wood. You went down that slide on a hot day and you would get your ass burnt. I was thinking about this not too long ago how they got rid of all the "dangerous" stuff and have all this plastic crap. We are raising a nation of weenies that grew up on plastic equipment now. Oh well whatever, i never got hurt too bad.
