A few from this past weekend. Critique away - the harsher the better.

1.

2. My very first HDR... tried to keep it subtle.

3.

4. I have a colourized version of this as well... can't decide which I prefer.

5. My tripod was in a puddle formed from a dripping ceiling... which was weird because it hadn't rained in probably a week.

All feedback appreciated.

could you repost this after sizing your pics? It's tough to make a judgement on a picture you see all at once.

How would you prefer I size them? And I don't have a clue what you mean by "tough to make a judgement on a picture you see all at once"... how can you not see a picture all at once??

sorry, I was writing while my daughter was talking in my other ear. What I meant to type is, It's tough to judge when you Can't see the picture all at once. I would prefer to see the pictures sized so as to fit a computer screen, without the need to scroll up and down or side to side.

harsh hmmm,
they're scene shots, but the scenes themselves are dull - or you've failed to pull out what made them special. They're grainy (in a bad way), poorly framed to emphasise the subject (which is a lil hazy anyway). there appear to be plenty of details you could have shot, try some of those as well next time. or just find more interesting locations to shoot.

My personal favorites are 2, 3 and 4, but all of these are very well-composed. You have a good eye for simple but deep pictures. I'd love to see more.

Thanks all...

Jannx - DSLR (a D70 to be exact). Thanks for your comments.

dsankt - Thanks for the criticism. I came away with several "detail" shots as well, but I have a bit of a personal bias against them so I don't tend to post many (not to say that they don't have merit - I just prefer something with a bit more atmosphere). I'll take your comments into consideration on my next trip, thanks.

Shai Hulud - thanks very much.

I really like the play on light that you consistently present through these four photos. It adds a certain amount of mood to the photograph, and it really makes them stand out over many of the shots that I see posted on this forum. I am no pro photographer, but to be honest, macro photography and crazy angles don't ALWAYS do a scene justice. Sometimes, aesthetically, it is nice to see a well composed photograph that plays well on itself and merits a second glance.

-edit-

I would recommend dropping the ISO on your D70 - it ALMOST looks like you're shooting at 1600 ISO.

I think you have potential. Keep shooting. Keep posting. I'd like to watch your development.

I will admit though... even though I think you have potential, I'm not really into this set. I think you can do better.

Thanks... I don't recall what my ISO setting was, but most of these were relatively long exposures. I've noticed the "Long Exposure Noise Reduction" option on my camera but never used it. Is that something that would be useful here, or is it generally for crazy long nighttime exposures? I'm still learning this DSLR stuff...

#1 The beam of light coming out of the doorway is extremely distracting, and not in a good way. Kinda like Obi Wan is coming out to kick my ass. The rest of it is a bit blah. Though if you cropped it to only the machine on the right, you could have a more interesting piece (well, at least to me). The roll of whatever it is on the bottom left corner looks like it has some potential as well. If you took this with a digital camera at a decent res, you could easily pull these bits up.

#2 If you could tone down the brightest bit of light on the left wall/ceiling, I think it would help not draw the eye so much. The pallets on the floor near the front of your shot are very visually appealing.

#3 Is awesome! It's like that place is holding its breath, waiting for someone to fill that void of light. I'd toss up some young, sad looking girl sitting hunched over, staring at the floor or off into the darkness and call it "Paradise Lost" or something along those lines. But then I am prone to bouts of fantasy.

#4 This looks much better than the first one, as the light coming through the door is overshadowed by the steady fading light coming from around the corner. Good job.

#5 The dark coming out of the bottom right corner is eating the image. I suggest cropping that out or lightening the corner. I really like the varying, yet oddly matching, browns.

Also, great icon. I love those Jeopardy skits.

Nyssa, thanks - I hadn't noticed a lot of those things you mentioned, but they seem to stand out to me now when I look again.

Also, great icon. I love those Jeopardy skits.
