|  | | | I figured I would post something useful on here. I think it might be the first informative post on here dealing with a issue, most explorers think about but don't know anything about. I wont give you medical information I am just going to tell you the most prudent action in case.
By the time you finish this post you will no longer be ignorant. That means you have no excuses
If someone falls DO NOT MOVE THEM! If you suspect someone fell and they have anything more then a twisted ankle or minor break DO NOT MOVE THEM! You could cause paralysis or even death in your friend. Accept responsibility for being in the place and get them help.
Next if you have several people, get the ones who are strongest emotionally no more then two to stay with the victim. DO NOT TOUCH THE VICTIM, even is you are asked to by the victim. reassure them you understand but you don't want them hurting even more. Anyone else should leave to get help or string out so they can point the EMT's to the scene more quickly. I don't care if you have to break a door down make sure you can get them in quickly If the victim isn't going to plunge to his/her death, or the building is NOT on fire DO NOT move the Victim.
I keep pointing out do not move because people panic and the first thing they want to do is get out, and not get in trouble. That's all well and good but you will hurt or kill someone. If you have anything illegal on you send it out with one person to the car. Do not attempt to move the victim. I have seen this with kids who are in car wrecks under age will try to pull the under aged driver out of the front seat and put them in the back one. People get dumb when shit goes wrong. Remember this and hopefully yu will prevent further injury or death.
Do not panic, it wont help.

Another valuable point is that you want to support the head or neck in the position it already is in. Like Mark said, moving or straightening the head or neck could sever the spinal chord and kill buddy. Only paramedics are properly equipped to deal with a spinal injury in an abandonment. I doubt you guys carry spinal boards with you when you go on an adventure.

Ankle injuries (which can be by far the most common form of injury in UE), you should also try to keep the ankle in the same position it was originally as much as possible. DON'T try to twist it or anything. It can just worsen it. Get up with the help of your buddy, and don't do anything with that foot.
Also, as much as the temptation might be, don't take off your footwear until you are in the ER. By loosening it, you will allow any fractures to come apart, worsening it.
This is stuff I'm thinking about a lot as I will most definitely be in an old refinery by tomorrow or the day after.
This thread is excellent. Perhaps we should also cover the subject of what to do if YOU get injured and are exploring alone (probably not the best idea out there, but shit happens). But I personally cannot think of advice going beyond the usual "carry a cell phone and try to a small first aid kit with you".
