| | | Said Best in Color or B&W? Please discuss! < on 10/6/2006 12:15 AM >
| | | What do you think? These are a few "borderline" pictures I took. Do you think that they are better represented in BW or Color? Thoughts about BW conversion? Some say that a crappy picture is a crappy picture. . . . But others argue that defects in tone, hue, and lighting can be masked very well by converting to BW. Discuss please! 1

| | | I personally think that they all look best in color. By no means am I an expert, but with B&W in those shots you seem to lose the richness/feel of the location. As been suggested already maybe a sepia tone or maybe a desaturated look. B&W shots have there place and to me alot of people over use it, dont get me wrong I have seen some awsome B&W shots but when used like this, it makes the shot feel "cold". Then again, I am a newbie what do I know?lol

| | | I think the b&w takes too much of the depth out of them... the only real thing you seem to be getting from the color. Think 2 could pull it off just b/c it looks like you did a little brightening-- which helped to draw the eye out of the foreground. Maybe it's me but it seems that ppl use b&w to hide things & too often it shows if they aren't careful. It just gives the mind less things to confront/calculate. I think these need the color, gives you more to chew on. Not knocking it, am a HUGE fan of b&w, just not so much for these. Might be better off with different adjustments (?)...

| | | How did you convert them to B&W? Casue you seem to loose alot of detail in the highlights. Try to do the conversion in Adobe Lightroom, it's free for the moment, and using the auto blend colors function, it automaticly blends the different monotones from rgb to achieve the highest detail possible.. either that or try to do it in PS with channel mixer.. heres an excellent page of the topic; http://www.northli...ack-and-white.html nice photos by the way! - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - edited the link [last edit 10/6/2006 6:51 AM by monki - edited 1 times]

| | | Generally, I prefer color to black-and-white. However, the black-and-white has an austere feel to it that can be aesthetically pleasing. I'm not sure that any of these photos need it.

| | | IMO, I like #2 AND #3 in b/w, and I am big on b/w photos. A lot of my darker sites are shot in b/w. Simply for the darkness is an added value for the impact of b/w, to me. I think a darker area with a slightly lighted subject like in a basement or room without windows...makes a good b/w photo. That is just one condition I use; sometimes just a dimly lit room with a nice chair will do just fine. It also for me sets a certain mood, of desolence and loneliness to the photo. That is great for your second photo. [last edit 10/6/2006 2:53 PM by Bfagan - edited 1 times]

| | | its all about lighting and contrast if theres not much diffrece in vaule you should use color but if there are lots of shadows bandw will make the picture more dramatic! and spectacular #1 looks awsome in bandw bc there is lots of value but # 2 and 3 look awsome in color bc its a darker picture to begin with [last edit 10/6/2006 8:26 PM by Apple Sauce - edited 1 times]

| | | If you changed the pictures from color to BW your not doing them justice. Also it looks like you took those pictures for a color. I myself have prefrence to BW I find the pictures to be deeper and the contrasts to be stronger.

| | | B&W is grossly overused. Colour is trickier to deal with - and slightly more challenging to get right - but is worth the extra effort. In this context, B&W generally looks amateurish and cliche.

| | | I honestly think 1 and 2 look best in black and white but number three looks good in color. For example look in here: http://www.uer.ca/...d=36270&currpage=1 The first picture is in black and white. Now look at reply #4 where the same picture is in color. Sure the color took me quite a bit longer to work out but it was worth it in my opinion. [last edit 10/7/2006 5:21 PM by cwestcivic5 - edited 1 times]

| | | I'm a fan of B&W, but I think all three of these examples were wrecked when they were converted. As monki pointed out, you're losing all detail in the upper tone range - take a look at the big wooden beam in #1, the floor in the background of #2, etc. Even if they were converted correctly, I still think these photos in particular all work better in colour, for the reason 'hedonisticvanity' pointed out. I have a recent photo of my own that I'm having a hard time deciding colour vs. B&W... what do you guys think?

Thanks.

| | | 1 and 2 have much more detail apparent in black and white than in color. In one I disagree with many of the posts here, although I like color for its truth, the colors are too much the same. Going to black and white emphasizes the structure while the color version is sort of muddy with its lack of contrast. #3 definitely has to be color. You can't see the neat stuff going on with that gunk in the center when converted to b&w. There is distinct difference between the colors there that isn't shown by black and grey. Those colors are just cool.

| | | I am surely the last person anyone would want opinions about photography from but some are just better B&W I think. If there are shots with no real colors that stand out in shot B&W lets me focus on the detail. I have looked at the same picture in color and B&W and see so much more in the B&W.
A mirage is not an optical illusion. It is a real phenomenon, and one can take photographs of it. The interpretation of the image, however, is up to the fantasy of the human mind. |
