| | | | unreliable, heavy, and worthless. I'd rather have a cheapo dollar store flashlight. The last drain I went in, It kept on going out, on new batteries, so I had to go like 150 yards in the dark, with junctions and everything. The little keychain flashlights are more helpful.

I used to use a headlamp, it slowly fell apart. People always tend to forget that it's up there at eye level and when they turn to talk to people they blind them. Useful when climbing around and stuff though or when you just need an extra hand.
My 2D maglite has never given me any problems though.
Here's a lockpick. It might be handy if you, the master of unlocking, take it with you. |

It was my only light, and it took a lot of shit that day. I was throwing it on rocks and constantly submerging it and stuff like that, because I was too occupied fighting the current to worry about it. I'm pretty sure another light would've crapped out on me after all the abuse.
It seemed like a good idea at the time... |

Thats what I love about mag lites. they take alot of shit. also a good weapon if you have a disgruntled junkie or homeless person trying to attack you. lol

Maglites can take a lot of shit, but the bulbs can't take much. That aside, they're still useful, I carry one as a backup at all times.

| | | | why yes, I did drop it in the water. I was under the impression that I could. I guess not. I still say the same thing. I got one of those shake up LED flashlights from the fleamarket for 2 dollars, and I've had it underwater and banged around a whole lot and it still holds up.
My main gripe about the maglight is that it's so freakin heavy. when I'm on my hands and knees in a tunnel it's hard to hold, so I have to put it in my pocket or something and it just weighs me down a ton. My personal preference over anything is this little led keychain light I got from a medical confrence for free. I waterproofed it with aquarium sealant, and it's absoultely great. I can hold it in my teeth if I need to, and i don't have to have anything on my head.

Maglites are water-resistant, but you need to keep all of the o-rings (and the rubber switch button) clean and well-lubed with silicone grease.
I've had the switches on two different 2D Maglites fail. Both times were in pitch-black steam tunnels. Thankfully I carry a backup light... I'll never trust Maglite again*.
* edit: Except for the new Luxeon LED Mini-Maglites. They're pretty sweet.

I really don't like the Maglites that takes D cells, because, well they're big. This has nothing to do with Mag though. Anything that runs on D size batteries is going to be big and heavy. Surefires are just as bright or brighter and much smaller, but its not because of the light. They use a special kind of batteries that can supply a lot of power despite its small size and light weight, known as the CR123A 3V lithium. This battery's thickness is somewhere between AA and C size alkalines and 2/3 the height of the AA.
You can saw off a big chunk of a Mag 6D, fit it with 3 CR123As and it would be just as bright and MUCH lighter. These special batteries aren't cheap. They're around $5/ea retail and don't expect to find one at a gas station. Mag simply designed their lights around commonly available standard batteries and that's majority of the bulk.
My preference is something AA powered, so I didn't use the big Mags and the standard Minimag was just not bright enough.
If you wanted a relatively powerful 2 or 3AA flashlight, you had to buy an expensive LED light like a Fenix L2P ($45). Maglight just came out with 2AA and 3AA Minimag LED flashlights using a single high power (3W claim) and these are very good and much more affordable than a Fenix.
You can get a 3AA Minimag for $20 from any Home Depot. If you don't see one, they'll get some in soon enough.

Ive had 3 switch failures, one bulb socket failure and now a tail spring that just wont maintain good continuity on 6 MAG-LITES, (this isnt counting numerous 2AA bulb burnouts and peeling chrome on a reflector)
I dont use them where I need to trust them any more either but there Ok for the truck and around the house.
