Soviet city abandoned after fall of Soviet Union

Found the following reference to an abandoned Soviet town on Boing-Boing.

Apparently, after the collapse of the Soviet Union around 1990, any number of towns had to be abandoned as the Soviet military withdrew; the towns were created around the bases, and when the bases were abandoned, the towns no longer had any reason to continue to exist.

There are lots more pics there, and some commentary (by the photographer, I believe.)

"You're a catastrophe... On your watch we've lost almost all of our allies, the budget surplus, four airliners, two trade centers, a piece of the Pentagon and the city of New Orleans. Maybe your just not lucky. I'm not saying you don't love this country. I'm just wondering how much worse it could be if you were on the other side. Yes, God does speak to you. And he's saying: Take a hint." B. Maher

It's official. I want to get married in an abandoned church and honeymoon in the former USSR.

anyone interested in post soviet abandonments had better hurry. things are beginning to fall apart at a rapid rate... shoddy construction in a lot of cases. even the ukraine is expected to put a hold on trips into pripyat because buildings are collapsing. i'm headed there next summer before it's too late.

according to the location, this remnant seems to be within close proximity to a very active city... as in a half mile at the most. just seems to be a section of the town no longer in use. still cool though.

When I saw the these pics for the first time the next thing I did was to check the prices of Lada Nivas and UAZes from a Finnish online car dealer.

I've been thinking of my next summer's Chernobyl exclusion zone tour. Is it really worth of 800 euros that a 4-5 day trip would cost? After all, I've seen thousand of pics already, and the tours always take you to the same locations. A fellow Finnish explorer made an unofficial visit alone, but she's a little nuts...

tupsumato, when do you plan on being in pripyat? seems like everyone is headed there next summer. don't feel so bad about 800 euros, you should see my cost estimate for round trip from the us.

No plans of any kind since I don't know about my or my fellow explorers' working and holiday schedules yet. If we're going, it'll probably be around July.

Anyway, 800 euros is quite a lot for me since I'm a full-time university student with incomes around 350-400 euros in a month.

I recently got my hands on an old Skoda (Czech car) and intend to take this to eastern Europe next summer. Russia seems very interesting, but I don't read russian very well, and I just understand and speak a few of the most important words in russian. Some larger places will german (which I speak fluently) work too, but I'd like to learn some more russian.

At least I'd like to take the Skoda to Russia and Ukraine. It's just the kind of car, together with cars like Lada, that you can drive and park almost everywhere without being afraid of theft.. ;)

One of those rear-engined ones? My family used to have one as a second car. It was truly one of those cars you won't miss after selling them.

This past April I was married in an abandoned church, but it was a little Southern Ontario job. Regardless, there is something really wonderful about the feeling that is created in a building with such a rich history. The church that I was married in was built in the 1800's, and we were only the second couple in its history to be married there. The first atheist couple. ^-~

there are a ton of forgotten cities around chernoble and for good reason. i was on a web site that had russian explorers and they filmed all the towns they went to and they had a fallout metter, it was crazy certian places they just left cause there was to much fall out still. but the buildings they went too were huge and people just left them.

I can only imagine the amount of abandonment in the old Soviet run areas. Along with the things that are seen on the surface, I'm sure you can could also find an abundance of underground facilities also.
