a buddy of mine got into the santa fe building, and evidently there are some old train tracks running under downtown. Anyone got any info on these?

I have nothing to ad, but that sounds fascinating. Keep us informed.

I have changed my personal exploring ethics code. From now on it will be: "Take only aimed shots, leave only hobo corpses." Copper scrappers, meth heads and homeless beware. The Jonsered cometh among you, bringing fear and dread.

he's linking me to the articles now, he got down to the tracks themselves but didn't have the lighting necessary to explore them.

if you check out coffinnail's "SF railroad" entry in the location database, there are pictures in it.

The Santa Fe building (in particular, the current accessibility conditions) came up in a weekend post on the dallasmetropolis.com forum. Just be aware that there's a Federal Building in the area, so no funny stuff!

My architect buddies (spies) tell me of a large DART transit intersection under the Sante Fe Building. Because of huge construction cost overruns, the intersection was built but not finished out (abandoned). I have a lead on how to access it using the proper channels and contacts. You'll not want to 'backdoor' this one. Doing a TV show on "Underground Texas". Anyone with any suggestions for 'dark and spooky' underground places.. I'd appreciate a contact, suggestions, ideas, locations.
Not a regular UER visitor but visit often & support all forms of exploration. Currently doing movie location scouting in North Texas... you can help! Thanks! Gary Phone: (903) 624-1139 or e-mail.

I think your buddy may be pulling your leg. One of the SF buildings was demolished, one's federal offices , one's Soho Lofts which uses the preexisting underground parking and walled off access to the old tracks and the last has access to the old tracks but not much. Back in the late 70's, we used to play around down in the tunnels and went so far as to build a two level stage and ran extension cords down for a big punk rock party that never happened. Only about 20% of what we played in is still accessible. Still cool though!

Nah,
It was under the building they demolished.

File this under "unexpected hazards". Imagine you had scored access to the old Santa Fe tracks... then there's a crack, a pop, and a wall of water...

Companies pay $2.33 million settlement for flood damage in downtown Dallas

Dynamic Cable Construction and Reata Construction Company were ordered to pay a $2.33 million settlement to compensate the U.S. for flood damage that occurred in September 2000 in two federal buildings in downtown Dallas.

The case collected water loss damages to the Earle Cabell Federal Building/U.S. Courthouse and the Santa Fe Federal Building, resulting from a catastrophic break of a 30-inch pressurized underground water main flooding an abandoned rail tunnel connected to the federal buildings.

In November 2004, a federal jury in Dallas returned a verdict against Dynamic Cable Construction Company and Reata Construction Company to compensate the U.S. for damage when the force of water flooded the tunnel from Young Street to the wall that separates the Santa Fe Federal building from the Santa Fe Terminal Lofts building. The intense water pressure forced the collapse of the sealed concrete cinder block tunnel entrance causing the basement in the Santa Fe Federal building to be demolished and flooding into the basement and sub-basement of the Earle Cabell Federal Building/U.S. Courthouse.

(More details at the link. Good stuff to scare the n00bs. )

Last time I was there, there were a bunch of cops going in and out. I don't know what was up but they buttoned the place up tight and repainted and replaced the plywood.
