Silent alarms?

Well last night we spent about 30 min trying to get into this building...we finally found a way in. The alarm wires were cut to this door so my friend could let the rest of us in. We get in and this building was pretty sweet. We start to explore and tape video footage and such and i found this office looking place i went in and saw this ADT alarm sticker. As soon as i saw this sticker i turned my head and saw a motion detector alarm thing and it blinked red from my movement, but didnt do anything else...no sound, nothing, just the red light. My first reaction was to get outta there. We all left in a hurry and went back to the car and headed to a nearby parking lot and order pizza;) . Then did a couple drives by the car and nothing has changed....So i dont know what the hell to do. Can we go back in or what?

Your thoughts?

I know I've already told you this, but I'll say it again. They wouldn't have responded for about 30 minutes, so the drive bys aren't really a useful way of seeing if it was on. What I'd do? Go back and look to see if anything's been moved.

1. Just because an alarm is active doesn't mean it's hooked up to anything. I've been in locations where the security alarm was going off audibly. One of them probably had been going off for the last 5 years.

2. Not all motion sensors are alarms. I've been in plenty of buildings with those motion sensor things hooked up to lights.

The world is not nearly as scary as the TV makes it out to be.

Purposely trip the alarm, then leave. Set up a command post in a car across the street and sit there, watch. wait.

If all else fails, see if you can follow the wires hooked up to the motion detector and see if it goes back to a panel.
If the panel has blinking red lights, or says the alarm was tripped with the day's date and the proper time, boot it.

Well said. It should work in most cases, but the one time I've tried something like this, it didn't go very well. When we decided that it wasn't connected to anything, we went back. Upon leaving, we were greeted by the owner, who had received a call from the police about his alarm going off. I managed to talk my way out of it, but it wasn't a fun experience.

I've been installing Alarm Systems for my whole life, and I was working for ADT up until a few months ago, I can tell you that NO MATTER what alarm devices you see installed in a building, there really is no way to tell if an alarm system has transmitted signals, the ONLY way to know for sure if you've been made, is to keep your ears on the scanner, and not be in the target area if you hear a police code reffering to a break and enter at your premise.

MANY alarm companies disable the LED in the motion detector, this prevents people from knowing that they have been spotted by the PIR... Canadian Alarm companies use a variety of strategies to install their systems..

If you have questions... I'm the one with answers.

That's probably not a great idea.

1. You might trip a different alarm on the way in, and get knicked on the way out.

2. If the cops show, they're going to notice a car with people in it across the street. Not to mention if you drive away while they're close by, and they see you. That's all the probable cause they need to search the vehicle. They find a bunch of "UE gear", and you'll have a hard time explaining yourself out of that one. Even if you are just "exploring", the cops wouldn't have a hard time making a B&E charge stick.

Be wise: if you think the building's alarmed, do you really want to chance it? There are plenty of other places to explore.

I hardly see that as being a problem. Under cover of night, it'd work excellently. It's not like I'm saying park there in the parking lot of said building with binocluars and stare incessently out of the window. I'm talking, a ways away, just sitting there with a coffee and if you wish, a smoke. If the fuzz comes, casually start up your car and amble away. If you get stopped, tell them you just got off work. If they search your car, you really shouldn't have anything illegal you can get busted with. What, a camera and flashlight? Maybe a respirator? If you're carrying crowbars, lockpicks and boltcutters you deserve to get screwed over.

If you use your same entrance the second visit, you shouldn't have a problem with tripping another one on the way in unless it's brand new. Keep your eyes out for motion detectors and ears perked for beeps. Should you cross paths with either, leave as fast as possible.

Well, if it's not a problem for you, give it a shot. If you get a real hardass of a cop, he can make your evening quite unpleasant.

Why take a chance? The payoff isn't worth the risk.

I agree more or less with him, but I think there are a few other ways to detect or see if there is an alarm installed; however most of them are guerrilla tactics..

I love doing things in which others have no idea even exist, dont you?

I'd like to respectfully disagree with el nerdo on this one. As long as this isn't some deserted location in the middle of nowhere (and I know for a fact it isn't), you can just look like a casual bystander. When a cop reports to an alarm being set off, they don't start attacking everyone in a 2 km vicinity of said alarm.

I'm assuming you're doing this at night.
Not too many casual bystanders standing around at night.

But hey, whatever floats your boat.

I just think encouraging this kind of behaviour is a bad idea, especially to the newer, less-experienced members here.

Yes but how many other places are there to explore with alarms that keep the vandals and locals away?

I'm sure T-mac knows his own comfort level and what he's willing to risk.

I'm not talking about you guys; I'm talking about the wave of rookies we get here from time to time.

If they hear about other members intentionally tripping alarms and then getting away with it, they're likely to try it themselves.

And that's not a good thing.

Well...an update...

It was a silent alarm im guessing because my friends went there to day and they fixed the hole in the fence that was our poe. Locked doors that we left unlocked and closed windows that we left open (we left em open because we booked it after we saw the motion sensor).

But of course, the owner could have just noticed the things that have been changed and figured out that someone was in there.

O well, that site is no good anymore

I've visited this abandoned factory/warehouse/office building, which had heat and electricity still on for several months although it was heavily vandalized. This happened last winter.

All the windows had security company stickers and inside the place were several motion detectors working (blinking red led) when I walked past. Security system was working but it was apparently no longer in contact with the security company so no one ever came.
