Hello, I stumbled across this site from the Zombie Squad homepage. I absolutely love the forum, and I've been exploring for a while. I haven't ever used a respirator, but I've been taking every chance I could for the past few years to get into something that maybe I wasn't "meant" to.

My question is this, recently I've been eyeing up a working factory. It's a REALLY old building, and I think its current use is probably multiple companies after who built it. Normally I stay away from anything in use, for the obvious tresspassing reasons, etc. However, this place leaves the windows open all the time, there's no fences or anything, and it's REALLY damn enticing. The outside of the building is full of character, I can only imagine the inside. I am no in the habit of breaking and entering or anything, and if I find any resistance to entry I'll simply turn around. However, I was wondering if others might have similar experiences, and might be able to tell me how they went. If anyone's been accosted, what happened if someone saw them, etc.

My second question revolves around heights. I love to climb tall things. I've walked a number of train tressels, climbed a couple huge factory tanks, a water tower once, and been up on a few out of commission cell-phone towers. Has anyone got any good ideas for stuff to climb UP on? I know it's as easy as craning ones neck up to the sky, but maybe there's something I haven't thought about?

Thanks for the answers, if I've stepped over any lines or anything feel free to tell me and not answer my questions. I LOVE the resource, who'd have ever thought urban exploring like this would have such a following?

I've only explored one active building. It was a power substation that controlled power to all of downtown Rochester. Looking back on it, with all the paranoia over terrorism, it was probably a really stupid idea, especially with the entrance we used. We got in, explored, and got out without any problems luckily.

Besides the obvious issue of most likely getting in more trouble for UEing an active site than an abandoned one, I personally don't find them that interesting. I like the character a building starts to gain after it's been decaying for years. Even a newly abandoned building is still pretty boring.

One thing that definitely might help us give advice is if you gave us at least a vague idea what the factory does.

I agree that active sites are more fun then I care for. Strangely the best way to access them is sometimes to simply ask the right person for permission.

Just when I thought I was out... they pulled me back in.

Definatley, as for heights, I also love being up high.
Good spots to go
Apartment rooftops
water towers
cell towers
grain silos
school roofs (maybe you'll find the pool)
hospital roofs

I find roofs to be an awsome place to read and do homework.

My alltime favorite roof is ontop an old cereal factory, It has birch trees, flowers, squirells and butterflies. Plus its near train tracks another favorite.

Trying to win hearts and minds, but willing to splatter them if neccesary.

Ive explored about 3 active buildings. They aren't my favorite places to go because I like to avoid getting caught if I can.
When it comes to abandoned places, I too turn away if theres anything preventing me from getting inside. I dont believe in forcing entry.
Heights, well, if its got a ladder, climb it lol

I go into staff-only sections of the university buildings around my town all the time, in fact it's so common I don't even consider it UE anymore. But that's probably nothing to sneaking into a factory. Exploring active sites is generally referred to as "infiltrating", and this was Ninjalicious's area of expertise (see http://www.infiltration.org/). It can be as simple as crawling through the window and avoiding detection, but depending on the level of security involved you might need to just ask the right people.

You're getting the idea. Construction cranes, yeah. They're terrifying.
