Travelling to Europe

Me and a few friends will be travelling to Europe around February. I'm trying to come up with some stuff to go see/do outside of the normal touristy crap. Not sure where all we're hitting, but I know we'll hit Germany. Any recommendations of stuff to check out?

I've read about the Paris catacombs...and they sound amazing, but I'm not going to go down there when none of us know the layout. Also, I really don't feel like getting arrested in a foreign country.

Thanks alot.

Well i know they're touristy but there are some great theme-parks in Germany. If you get the chance visit Europa Park in Rust. Some great rides...

There are also loads of old bunkers from the Siegfried line still around...I'm not sure whether you're allowed there cause there are supposed to be unexploded shells around them or something like that.

And check out some of castles if you can.Not the done up tourists ones but the proper ruins out in the middle of nowhere. They're pretty fun to climb around and explore.

It's almost uncomprehensible to go to Germany and not visit :
-A concentration camp (I recommend Sauchsenhausen, less tourists)
-Checkpoint Charlie (that's corny-tourist but still is a must I think)
-If you walk around Check Point Charlie, you'll find some original, never-restored sections of the wall as well as old Nazi ministry buildings
-If you do your research, you can even find the exact location if where Hitler's bunker was. If you look carefully, you might find the dwelled gate in the middle of the trees that leads to what was the entrance of the bunker. This is the exact spot where the bodies of Hitler and his wife Eva Brown were cremated after both of them committed suicide.
-Walking Unter Den Linden all the way, including the Brandeburg Gate (of course)
-Right next to the Fernsehturm (the tower), there's the ruins of the 13th century monastery, left as they were at the end of WW2
-If you go in Berlin Mitte, ask for direction for the small, local flea market, there's amazing things from the communist era for sale, it's AMAZING
-If you go in suburbia Berlin, go to the south and visit the 1936 Olympic stadium, which is now abandoned (althought the Mundial FIFA (soccer/football cup) stadium was build INSIDE the 1936 stadium (you can imagine how the big the old stadium is!). If you ask nicely the guys at the entrance, you get take the elevator to the top of the abandoned tower. The view is amazing.

Germany is simply amazing. Nuremberg is a must too...The "giantness" of places the nazies built is just incredible. Crazy, megalomaniac regime...

I don't know about the other concentration camps in Germany, but I was a little disappointed when I visited Sachsenhausen. With what the Russians did to it in the '60s and what the Germans have done since, there is not much of the original camp left. It is much more of an exhibition. But it's still well worth a visit if you're in Berlin.

I guess it's a question of perspective. The abandoned SS Mess and the rest of the Sauchsenhausen camp, listening to all the audio commentaries from camp prisonners and being ALONE in the whole camp (ok, I always travel off tourist season), was for me a lot more moving then when I visited Auschwitz and almost had to wait in line to see old luggages and items protected by ropes, chains and windows.

I was sitting alone on one of the stones that marks the old jewish barracks and I could imagine all the activity going on at the camp. It was raining, it was cold, everything was grey. Just walking to the entrance of the camp and seeing the big gate was very touching. No one in front of me, no one behind.

Auschwitz and Dauchau were quite some experiences too. But I just thought they were too touristic (I know, it's very ironic when you're talking about concentration camps, I know).

GO TO THE CATACOMBS.

it was one of the most incredible experiences of my life. you just need to make nice with a person called a "cataphile" who is a "lover of the catacombs"

they don't usually like americans, but maybe they will be nice to you if you are friendly and polite. they were incredible hosts to me. i spent 32 hours in that place, and plan to go 48-60 hours in there straight this november as well.

do you speak french?

otherwise, there are great factories and hospitals in belgium, holland, scotland, wales, and the london/surrey/birmingham areas. and berlin looks delicious.

good luck.

wow, lucky you! i consider going to the catacombs fulfilling one of my top life dreams/goals. one of the most incredible experiences of my life, though i find it's hard to explain to others...
if i could live down there and just pop up to go into "hopitale psychiatrique" here and there, i would!

cane hill in the london area is also amazing. hard one to crack, but exciting and very visually appealing as well.

I would like to see the catacombs..but I know no cataphiles, and I don't know French. I've heard there is a public tour section...so I may have to settle on that.

Also, thanks to everyone else for the ideas. Keep them coming if you have them.

I didn't do the public tour one but it will give you a good look at what it once was like...

Unfortunately it don't look like that anymore.

After so many people asking what to see and do in france and germany it would be good to put together a article/intro to this area cause every fifth thread is asking what to do in france!!!

Well l have some free time now so l might make a start...
Maze l will need some of your help!

Actually something like a guide is whatl have in mind.

Anyway getting off topic but something l think that needs to be addressed.

Hellfire club is cool. So was the old orphanage downtown (West of the Old Chimney, near the small French Market).

If only the Devil would have appeared to me once I did walk 3 times backward around the building. Hmmm.

It had to be anti-clockwise too.Maybe thats why he didn't appear!Sadly the Hellfire Club has turned into a scumbag hang-out over the past few years...

I haven't had a chance to look around Dublin yet.I'd imagine it has some great spots but it's a dangerous city,a lot of junkies...

I was thinking a intro guide thing for mainly france.
Might incorporate germany and Belgium too.

But it's not going to be a tourist type guide, more a question and answers for UE people.

But it's on my list of things to do which is actually getting smaller for once!

Anyway maze yeah once l have a draft which could be fairly soon l will get some input from you...

I've been researching on the catacombs for a year now, downloaded huge maps, hell even copy/pasted texts from Geos1777 and posts from Ckzone into an automatic translator so I can understand them I'd sell my soul if I had the time, money and english speaking guide to visit the catacombs One of my top life "must do's"

I second that. Teufelsberg is big and it's history is very interesting. Just take the S-Bahn to Grünewald, from there it's a 20 minute walk up on the top. The area is heavily fenced, but there are several holes in the fence. In addition to the Teufelsberg station itself, the view from the top is incredible on a clear day.
