in my opinion, these pictures compete with the work of best photographers on here.

and thats exciting, considering you're new to photography.

#1 suffers from focus problems. did you not use a tripod? the subject is blurry. you're on the right track with selective focus though.

#2. same as #1. very interesting subject and elements though.

#3. same as #1 and 2. i like it a lot, it could stand to be a little darker in my opinion. maybe a little more contrast to bring out the detail.

#4. nice minimalist composition, focusing on the blank areas rather than the objects.

#5. wow, whatever is onstage is washed out SO much.

#6. cute. nice use of selective focus.

EDIT: also, i can see white wedge shapes around the edges. you probably just missed those when cropping. they werent distracting in any way, i just had to be annoying and point that out i guess.

I did infact use a tripod which says something about my tripod or my hands while pressing the shutter release.

#3. same as #1 and 2. i like it a lot, it could stand to be a little darker in my opinion. maybe a little more contrast to bring out the detail.

To make this image darker would you have it processed differently or would you fiddle with the levels in photoshop?

#5. wow, whatever is onstage is washed out SO much.

Yeah. Just...yeah.

EDIT: also, i can see white wedge shapes around the edges. you probably just missed those when cropping. they werent distracting in any way, i just had to be annoying and point that out i guess.

My scanner adds the little white wedge bits to all my images and I can't manage to crop them out with out taking a bit of my photo along with them. Eh, not being annoying about it, they definitely bother me too.

Also, thank you for your very nice compliment. I've had my camera for about 3 weeks and have been taking pictures for about the same length of time.

If you're having trouble with shaky hands while shooting, I'd recommend getting a mechanical shutter release cable. You can get them in all different sizes, relatively cheap. Great for long exposure shots.

Today is your way out...

i know you very recently replaced your tripod-which will help.
invest in a quick release cable- helpful as well.

[just remember all the memories behind these photographs and the importance of "quality" will fade fast]

Definitely an awesome set.

Since I'm new to photography and everything as well, I can't really critique.

But I enjoy the photos!

Your images seem somewhat soft. Work on focusing and the other suggestions above. The image of the theatre seats is very interesting, but I think you metered the wrong area and that's why your highlights are blown out. Try to re-shoot if you can keeping that in mind and maybe a wider depth of field as well. Otherwise, the only way to get better at photography is to shoot and shoot lots! Bring your camera everywhere you go.

Cool shots... I was going to comment on the focus as well before I read the other comments. If you were using a tripod, I have wonder if maybe the focus problems happened while scanning?

I dont think the focus problems in this set come from scanning them. The prints were also like that. While I was using a tripod, it could best be describes ad spindly and somewhat sketchy. My hands shake as well and i wasn;t using a cable release. I've since gotten a new [and loads better] tripod as well as acquired a cable release. I'm hoping for slightly better results in the future.

2 and 4 are my best picks, as mentioned before there's a slight focus problem but nothing you can't fix easily, and i agree these photos are great not only for a beginner, but someone more advanced
