| | | Stupid idea. You shouldn't have to run away from police because of a possible trespassing charge. It can only make things worse. I would only run if I were completely certain I would get away and they'd have no way to know who I was or what I looked like. [last edit 8/4/2006 1:40 AM by Stewie - edited 1 times]

Unprovoked flight upon the sight of police is reasonable suspicion and will warrant a pursuit. That pursuit can land you misdemeanor charges of failing to stop, evasion and failure to obey a lawful order; not to mention possible felony charges depending on what happens during the pursuit. Anything that happens while you were interfering with the duties of that police officer can also be held against you, even negligent homocide. Weigh that against a slim chance of a trespassing 2 charge and do the math.
When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change. |

I'm going to suggest not ever trying it. There's just too much risk, especially if they decide to try and track you down. Here, read this: (Hat tip to lisa lamb for the image, she posted it elsewhere first) You'll do fine. [last edit 8/4/2006 3:33 AM by -MisfitStyle- - edited 1 times]

Only once, from the railroad police. I would normally NEVER run from the cops, but in this case I had a major athletic advantage, full camoflage, and a 100yd head start. And they were chasing me through a thick forest that I knew well.
Or has anyone talked your way out of wha your doing to the police and they let you go? |
Got caught underground on Saturday. Told the cop what I was doing, and offered to leave if I wasn't supposed to be there. Cop pretty much apologized for bothering me, and walked off. On another occasion, I had to escort a group of cops to a cache of stolen property I found in a storm drain. They were impressed with the drain, and really didn't care that I'd been going down there.
Whats everyone's thoughts on running from the police? |
Don't run from the police. Really. They WILL catch you, and you WILL get locked up on felony charges. In my experience, if you're friendly and honest with the police, they're more likely to be nice to you.

That's really the best advice I'd give anyone too. Though depending on the situation leaving out certain chunks of information never hurt anyone.
Here's a lockpick. It might be handy if you, the master of unlocking, take it with you. |

| | | Running from the cops fires them up. Three times I saw them before they saw me: 1. A state was by my car, at first I sat watching him for a bit, after realizing he hadn't seen me approach. I decided whats he going to do as I was parked on public property on a utility access road. So I walked over to him. I was careful to let him know I was approaching, and kept my hands in plain sight. He ask what I was doing, and didn't care if I was taking pics. He told me he was going to have my car towed because it was by the access road. Damn. He said if I parked there again to leave him a note. Didn't warn me I was trespassing, instead he gave me a free pass! He knew exactly were I was, but I told him only a little of what I actually shot. He knew, and I knew he knew. Cool. 2. I was walking out of a site on RR property and saw the two squad cars a little too late. I just sauntered by them. They saw me, and watch as I got my car, but didn't seem to care. They were there guarding that site during off time between calls. 3. Not gonna tell except to say if I had run I would have been in deep shit. Note:Misfit, cheap shot, and not even original. As a matter of fact you hit on that head although you were not trying to. In the third example they did track me down before I approached them with my tag number. The had they local cops in my area go to my house and ask the neighbors if they knew my cell phone number, and what kind of person I was. They towed the car too. I don't give a rat's ass what you think, I've been playing in the sand box a long time.
Just when I thought I was out... they pulled me back in. |

I totally agree. Hiding and waiting them out is good if you know they won't find you. Confronting them sometimes works too. I've used polite confrontation to get out of something. Saved us from having the cops called on us. I may hide in abandoned buildings in my spare time, and have a certain disdain for humans, but I do have superb social skills lol

Better 100 than almost 2,000 of no consequence in a few months. But enough of taking over void's topic. Running from police, in my view. Can be a good thing. Use your smarts and do the same risk-reward calculation as you do when you scope out a location. Is it better to get caught when you had a 95% chance of escaping but decided to stay? No. But if you think it's 50-50, running might have some serious consequences.

| | | Ninjalicious offers a very accurate and scientific calculation you can perform in your head to figure out the risk/reward factor of running. Spend the money and get yourself a copy of Access All Areas. I think you'll find that this and most of your other queries are addressed.

| | | Personally a dumb idea. And also reason #2 I try to get permission to explore an area 90% of the time. When it comes to draining, the one time I've been caught by cops, they just asked what the hell I'm doing, then gave me a speech on how it's dangerous, then let me on my merry way. | | | Bad Idea. The best thing to do is see a cop before he sees you.If your in an abandoned building and see a squad car pull up out front try to find another way out so you can simply walk down the sidewalk etc.,the cop will see you and assume your just passing through,I've tried it.Technically in that case your just avoiding being caught and not flat out running with 3 cops on your tail. Most of the time when a cop or security guard stops you just come right out and tell them what you're doing, most of the time they'll just tell you to leave or to be careful and walk off.Depending on where you are the cops could care less about trespassing,I know here in B-ham they are more focused on drugs and prostitution and usually wont look twice at someone photographing an abandoned building.Just remember that security guards tend to let their uniforms and trucks with lightbars go to their head and are much more likely to try to find any way to pin you on something, this is why I refer to my local mall cops as the "Police Academy Rejects".Its just not worth it to run, you'll wind up with your face slammed in the ground and fines.
