| | 6th and Howard "Escaping Furniture" Building in SF? < on 8/3/2006 10:10 PM >
| | | Anybody ever explored in this one? It has veen vacant and for sale for years, Looks like the bottom floor is retail space, then floors 2-4 have a bunch of old furniture artistically stuck to the walls and escaping from windows. It is covered with murals from a pretty famous local artist. The outside of this building is very neat...Anyone seen the inside? http://static.flic...9_9a0ca7f8e5_m.jpg Since it is for sale, maybe a little social engineering could get us in if nothing else?

| | | I know the one, the name of that particular piece is defenestration which means to throw something or someone out a window. Hence the furniture. That area used to be like san francisco skid row. and that particular building was closed due to all the violence and drug use that ocurred in that building and surrounding area. I don't know when the building closed, but I know that the furniture was added sometime between 96-97. I haven't entered it due to the fact that I'm not a local of san fran, and the fact that that area is watched by the police because they don't want things to go back to how it used to be. If you are a local you probably noticed that alot of projects have been torn down and pricey lofts have been put up in their stead.

| | | I am going to assume that it is populated by homeless people and possibly druggies. Driven by it many times... never had the best opinion of it. I am more interested in the locations along 13th St (Howard and the like). There are a few large abandoned buildings.

| | | Actually 14th and Mission has the Armory, abandoned since 74. That's a jewel, and it's always been a goal of mine.

| | | I went inside the armoury once not long after the earthquake in '89. Very much an amazing work of wooden architecture! I wasn't able to make it upstairs to the mezzanine or balcony level due to the fact that the staircases were completely flooded and were totally unaccessible unless you were willing to jump in a very dark and probably at least 8 to 12 feet deep void of scary ass black water! No thanks, not me. I can only guess what might have been living down there. Aside from what a truly magnificent building it was from the inside the sounds I heard during my short exploration of the building were nothing short of creepy, but on an epic scale. I only wish I had brought a camera that day. I have never seen the roll up door open again since that day.

| | | I've always loved that building, but i wouldn't try getting in. That area is crawling with hobos 24x7 and they would surely screw things up or follow you in and shank you. edit: oh yea, the armory, I've always wanted to go in that too, I had a couple good friends who lived a few blocks away. We'd get drunk and plan out how we were going to get in. I'm pretty sure we came up with the plan that we had to get on the roof and find a way in from tehre =P [last edit 10/6/2006 9:16 PM by Cerberus - edited 1 times]

| | | The way the armory is designed, it has interspersed bricks sticking out of the normal brick facade -- perfect for climbing, if you're a decent free-climber, but pretty damn dangerous if you're not, because the nearest open windows are at least two-three stories up.

| | | Thankfully I'm an excellent climber, I think I could climb it that way, but I'd rather scope it out a bit find a different way up. May have to free climb it though heh EDIT: I'll let you know how it goes, if I never return, assume I broke many bones ;) [last edit 10/6/2006 10:46 PM by Cerberus - edited 1 times]

| | | This bums me out to think I was only a few blocks from there a week ago. I was on Howard at the Moscone Center at a convention for a few hours. I could have stopped by on the way to the PHSH. I'm planning on going back up there with a buddy of mine, and will plan to check both places out while we're there. Any others in the SF city we should try that is worth our time? At least to complete the day? -Ryan

| | | if you are interested there are ruins of the sutro baths just north of ocean beach. If you go south there is the Fort Funston nike missile site. Not much to se at either place but they are easily accessed for a quick drive by.

| | | Well, I talked with my friend, and I guess we got the three of us going. We'll be starting back at that camp... But ending up here. Haud: you want to meet up with us? We haven't set a time yet, but I think it'll be in a week or two. And I know that there are others on this thread that want to tag along... a thought. -Ryan

| | | I realize that adding a different subject to this thread is not good, but since we're on the topic and y'all are reading it anyways, when I and my two friends are ready to go (we have a firm schedule ready), I'll make a new thread and set a time to meet and do an entire day. It would probably be either on a Sunday or Monday. You can also PM me about the trip. Use the subject heading as "SF Day Trip", and I'll keep you informed. -Ryan
