Wal-Mart Tripods?

Ladies and Gentlemen:
* Reading various forums here I see much derision and hate of "Wal-Mart" tripods.
* While I DO have 2 serious "pro" (aka expensive Slik and Manfrotto) tripods, I also have a pair of $20-ish tripods from WalMart that I take exploring with me.
* Why all the hate folks? They work and are practically disposable @ that price; if I need to run away, toss them over a fence, or swing them like a bat it is no loss!

"The perfect tripod is a cubic yard of solid concrete with a 1/4" X #20 bold head sticking out of the top."

my concern is the cheap plastic quick detach fittings I would never trust them with a good camera of any weight

Yes, the is a big concern. Save the loot, and get one good Gitzo carbon fiber tripod that fits your height, and shootings requirements, and a good head with Manfrotto quick releases. Done.

Just when I thought I was out... they pulled me back in.

Spent the loot (loot?) and get a cheap ass tripod. When it breaks in six months, get a new one. No need to baby it or clean it. Chuck the tripod around, even! It's twenty bucks and does the job!

i have never taken a photograph in my life

Goog tripods last many years, are light, strong, easy to use and clean, and hard to break. Do it right the first time.

Yeah, loot. (slang, not proper usage)

I also have a professional tripod, but I'll often bring a cheap tripod or a monopod instead, for exactly the reasons DevilC mentions.

At least some of the hate is clearly due to the idea that Wal-mart = Crap, and therefore if a photographer uses equipment from Wal-mart, those Photographs must = Crap. Also it a way of calling the integrity of the artist into question, as in, "If you use anything from Wal-mart to create your Art, then you are not a Serious Artist. You are a Crap Artist, because Wal-mart only makes Crap."

Also along this line of logic is the idea that if you use professional equipment, you are obviously a professional photographer. This idea brings solace to many.

Completely agree in the fact that you dont need professional gear to get good results. Atleast to some degree. I have a 15 year old Kiev 35mm that takes better pictures than my brother's newer nikon film body. And THATS really saying something!

Buy the sunpak 5800D from Bestbuy. Best tripod I have owned it was about 30$ has lasted 6 months being beaten to hell, and it has even been used as a bat a few times. Also since it was so cheap I have no issue tossing it and buying a brand new one.

I have one, something else on it has broken almost every time I use it. It broke the very first time I used it. The only thing keeping it together now is crazy glue.

know what sucks?

when you have a shitty tripod that breaks shortly after getting into a difficult location.

did it suck having to ditch an expensive pro tripod while running from an overzealous security guard? yeah.

did it suck much worse getting into a place that's incredibly difficult and risky, and then to have to shoot freehand because my "walmart special" broke? sure did.

suck it up and buy a pro model, or it'll happen to you one day.

Or you could add a package of crazy glue to your exploring gear so that you can patch up your cheap tripod when it breaks =)

A 40$ tripod almost destroyed my 350d (The plastic tip that hold the camera took off, the camera felt right to the floor)

I will never trust a < 50$ tripod again.

My crappy tripod is about a foot high, but it's solidly built. It's aluminium and light. No quick releases here, you have to screw the camera on. I found this in an old telescope set.

If I ever get a decent camera, I'll probably get a new tripod, too.

i used to have a crappy tripod i got from my grandpa. it was a smith & victor and was probably 35 years old. it was far too heavy, so i bit the bullet and upgraded to a promaster system pro mini with a promaster ballhead. its nice, but a bit short.
