| | Chicago's Finest are the Nicest < on 7/28/2006 11:13 PM >
| | | This goes out to all the Canadians who have a stereotype of American law enforcement. While in Chicago I was driving down a east-west artery and found an old cop shop. I told my non-exploring friend to drive around the block while I explored the building. There were a number of mistakes made; I was spotted on the roof, my friend was staring at the building the second time the cops came (instead of driving around) and my car was in the parking lot. All of these mistakes brought attention to us and soon enough the Chicago Police detained my friend and figured out that I was inside the vacant cop shop. As I peeked my head out of the building slowly I saw two cop cars and a female officer. Knowing that I had been busted I climbed down the stand pipe and approached the officer. Immediately she belted out "Put your bag down slowly and raise your hands." I complied slowly and was promptly shoved against the red brick wall of the police station and placed into handcuffs. While the female officer searched my pockets I began explaining my actions to her. Understandably, she did not believe that a white young male would be on Chicago Ave exploring a vacant cop shop. Her disbelief only grew when she examined my passport and found out that I was a Canadian citizen. When I told the female officer that I was from Winnipeg she not only knew where the city was but commented that "it was a nice city." (It turns out that before becoming a police officer she had made runs to Winnipeg for FedEx.) With my pockets clean of any illegal weapons or possessions I was led to my car where I was asked once again about why I was in the cop shop. As I repeated my story numerous times the bizarre reality of the situation was beginning to make "sense" to the cops. The cops from the other squad car began to comically question why a Canadian, with a pregnant female from Minnesota but with an Iowa driver's license would be in one of the worst neighborhoods of Chicago. In the end I was released from my handcuff's and joked around with the officers about my situation and taught them some Canadian slogans and pronunciations.

| | | The few encounters I've had with Chicago police while exploring were actually quite pleasant. They have a difficult job to do and I have a lot of respect for them. CG: I'm glad you didn't get arrested, but really...it must of been pretty obvious you were not a threat, what with that goofy Canuk accent of yours.

| | | See, the problem with small town cops is that they don't have hard stuff to deal with and are really really likely to just give you crap because they have nothing better to do, or you are the worst trouble anyone has given them in a while. When you have to witness gang shootings and murders everyday, trespassing seems like small potatoes. In contrast, if you sit around eating donuts all day and wouldnt know a murdered corpse if it... well.. laid there in front of you, trespassing seems like a "real crime."

That is one of the more humorous posts I have seen. I am sure the cops found the situation more humorous than we do. Your friend rocks - exploring Chicago, in the summer AND pregnant?
