| | How should I get in? cameras < on 7/24/2006 6:18 AM >
| | | I found a rather large abandoned building in bad part of the town. I did a quick scouting and spotted security camera on each side of exterior wall and in the window was "trespass enforcement program - we cooperate with the police to enforce trespassing" or something in that effect. Give up or is there a good way around?

| | | I vote give up. If it's in a bad part of town and they have cameras, I'd personally err on the side of caution and assume they also have alarms on the doors and motion sensors. Unless there is something really cool in there that is worth the risk and difficulty it would take to get in, I'd just forget about it. [last edit 7/24/2006 9:59 PM by -MisfitStyle- - edited 2 times]

| | | I am sure that this will turn into a huge debate, but heres my 2 cents. Most cameras on abandoned buildings aren't being watched, or aren't functioning. Common logic would dictate if the building housed something worth secureing it probably wouldn't be abandoned. That being said if it houses special equipment then its probably recorded, but not actively watched. Check the whole building area, many buildings will have cameras on the front but not on the rear, where acess might be easier anyways. If in doubt, cover your face, hoodies, glasses, hats, or balaclava. If you are worried about being caught on camera gloves might be prudent as well. Before one of you goes off about balaclava's looking light terrorists... yeah your right, but going in with your face exposed to a camera makes you a known criminal. It's personal choice, not ninja maneuvers, and you never know what you might fine. The place might store something important, and the building might have been, or will be broken into. Now your a suspect.

| | | There are 6 sides to a cube, and there are only cameras on four of em, so..... I agree with mark on the camera's not being actively watched. The most you would have to worry about is if they are motion-detecting and trigger an alert (not likely if its near anything, like streets/paths/other buildings) or maybe an internal or perimeter security system. The cameras/sign especially are a deterrent more than a defense, so I think that you could always speed UE (time for lookround<response time for police) the place and pull out to see what sort of response it gets. Be careful, don't be identifiable (faces/license plates) on the cameras (the primary use of cameras is figuring out what happened once they realized something happened), and have fun.

| | | Here in California it is illegal (and maybe even a felony) to wear a mask while committing a crime. Just something to think about.

I love this sorts of posts. Blackhawk once said "You can not pack legally if your committing a crime. [sic]" They make me laugh, for reasons of obviousness. We understand that we are commiting a crime. I know that it's more charges and such, but it could be worded better. "It's another charge if you get caught wearing a mask while...." And I wouldn't worry about it, except that it draws attention (which is what gets you caught typically), unless it looks like you're 'sposed to be there (gas mask / ventillator / sust mask / goggles praps?).
All that said, thanks for the info (actually good to know) and thanks for making me laugh. [edit: fixed a quoting mistake] [last edit 7/24/2006 7:21 PM by MindHacker - edited 1 times]

ahh yes, I just came up with a great excuse next time i'm caught: "Well, I'm a building inspector and an insomniac, sooo...." but yeah, this is why hoodies are great. throw it up, walk past the cameras, throw it down. If you're worried too much about getting caught, don't go. [last edit 7/24/2006 7:36 PM by Mr.Coffee - edited 1 times]

| | | Hmmmm the building is "disused" but records show it is an active development site. 139,000 SQFT and 40,000SQFT of unfinished basement, sold last september for $6.2 million despite the building being 86 years old. Man I wanna explore this place. There were about two dozen facility permits issued for this premise in the last year and the most recent activity is the 17th of this month, so this explains why all the security.
Oh man, look at the enclosed corridor high up on the building.. So sexy.

| | | Good call on the hoodie. I wish I was thinking that clearly. As for the building: Impressive looking building, and rather pristine looking to. No graff, broken windows, or other visible vandalism. Based on what you said about the activity, there could vrey well be an alarm system. It should be advertised, so check the windows/doors for any signs/advertisements. Have you planned your entrance method yet? The building also looks similar to the boat on the treasure map, if you squint at it and try to read it into it. Looks like the best way to go in is the bottom SE corner, by the red. Just watch out for pirates. The pirates camera's might have blind spots due to parked vehicles, cameras, trees, outbuildings.... But an active alarm or no entry method should be your primary concerns.

| | | I retract my previous statement, that building looks too fun to let some cameras stop you. If it's an active building I still vote to forget about it. Otherwise, I'd say just scout it out to see what you're up against. Maybe do something really inconspicuous in the view of a camera (e.g. talk on a cell phone, walk a dog around, etc) and see if anyone comes. At that point at least you will know if it's monitored (probably isn't) or sets off an alarm.
