1111 rusk downtown houston

before arriving to texas, i read about 1111 rusk in the houston explorers thread. last week, i started scouting the place. friday, i went in. i thought it'd be more difficult to access, so i left behind my camera for fear it would break while being bitten by guard dogs. there are no guard dogs. there's a trailer out back (inhabited by a security man, presumably) and at least one motion sensor inside.

i plan to go back sometime next week. if anyone cares to join me, send a pm and i'd be thrilled to explore with you.

some pictures, more later. my laptop is dead so i have to shuffle photos about eclectically.

it was only a few months ago that i, over 2000 miles away, saw pictures of this site and dreamed of what i'd be like. it was worth the wait.

got scratched up on the way in. everyone says i look "evil" in that picture but frankly i dont see it.

i look forward to seeing what else houston has to offer.

If you jumped out at me in an abandonment, I would probably swing my big flashlite at you, scream like a girl and run faster than any fat man you have ever seen!

BTW are those big holes in the floor in #3?

Nice job. By the way, I think the evil comes from the angle of your head. If you were looking and facing directly at the camera you might not look so much so. ;)

Sure, but ultimately true evil comes from within....

I'm heading to Houston in a few weeks. What's the story with this place. Is it under constructions, or is it actually abandoned?

What info do you have in regard to the motion detector?

I just went there yesterday. It is completely abandoned. It was built in 1914 and sometime (no clue when) it was supposed to be converted into a Ritz-Carlton hotel, but that didn't happen and now it's just vacant.

As for getting in, when I went there was a security guard sitting in a pick up truck in a lot in the back. There was also a Winnebago back there, but he was definitely in the truck reading. Just by the Winnebago is a door to the first floor. Half of the "backyard" of the building is street level, the other half is 12 feet below street level. The street level part is where the guard was and has a chain link fence, the other part has a shoulder high wooden fence (like just smooth white boards, not a picket fence). Since I didn't think I could climb a fence and walk past a guy in a truck without being seen, I just hopped over the wooden fence and jumped into the pit (there's a part where you can sort of walk along the edge of the building down a few feet so it's not a terrible jump) and walked into a door to the basement that was in the pit. That basement door and the door behind the security guard are the only entrances I could find and I walked around the place about three or four times. I never saw a motion detector, though in the basement there was something with a red lit dot, but it didn't do anything and you don't have to walk by it to go up. There might be one in there somewhere, but I never ran across it.

Oh yeah, the security guard also sits in a chair in the door behind him too. He was doing that when I got to the second floor (I almost took a picture with flash of the room he was in ><), but he was asleep (I guess he moved from the truck) and never knew I was there. Tag_Cryptic's pics are much better than mine, but I like this one:

Beware room B! (The best part is that the wall is knocked in making the door worthless). And many thanks for alerting us to this site, Tag!

Sleeping security guards. Classic! I'd love to take a macro shot of a sleeping guard. Then run away before he could get his bearings.
