| | | #1 - All in all, a decent image of a really cool subject. The lighting is really nice here, but I think you could have done more with it - there is not a lot of shadow, and very even highlights, which indicates to me that subtracting a stop or two might make for a more interesting use of light. Also, the perspective is pretty dead-on, which can work, but doesn't here. I tend to think that the perspective distortion from tilting the camera upwards is the main culprit. Unfortunately, without using a LF camera with a tilting back, can't do much about that - so try a more interesting angle! Get low to the ground and off center, and REALLY look up. Try different angles like that, you'll find something that really works. #2 - Perhaps a better subject, but suffers from the same problems as #1, in addition to that really blown-out bit in the center. Try a few different exposures here; I tend to think less exposure would have made a better image. Those stairs to the left could be a really nice silhouette... #3 - My favourite of the bunch. It's cropped a little too close on the left, and the colours are a little muted - were you shooting film, I would suggest using a high-saturation film to make the colours pop; I don't know what to tell you with digital. In general, however, I really dig the composition! #4 - I see what you're trying to do here, but for whatever reason I don't think it works. The bottom of the image is way too cluttered, drawing the eye out of the frame. I think this is one of those "indistinct subject" situations, where nothing in particular is gripping. Cool concept; find a way to make it more compelling (perhaps locating the focal point a bit higher in the frame). #5 - Very cool. In general, it's a "no-no" to split an image right down the center, but it works here. Could be contrastier, however; There is a significant shadow on the railing, but it's not contiguous with anything. Also, there is a bit of flare coming in from the top. The bars on the railing should be emphasized a bit more. I'd recommend shooting this one at a different time of day, being mindful not to allow that light to come in from the top, ruining decent shadows. And perhaps shoot it a bit darker, though that's probably just a personal preference.

Yeah, I was raking through pics for curves and stairs to be able to put up five pics on a theme, so the Beedingwood one sort of fitted even though it's not burnt. The stairs in both one & two were still climbable, two more easily so than one as you suggest. But other than getting you a slightly higher vantage point neither lead anywhere as the entire building had suffered as badly in the fire as both lobby staircases, not a floorboard or joist in sight.
