A bit off topic; but does most of Buffalo look like that?

Actually, yes it does. In the low-income areas, it's common to see what is in those pictures. I was all over that area today, and off the top of my head, I can recall seeing 2 burned out buildings, and countless abandoned houses and businesses. Even in nice places, such as the Elmwood strip, there are many empty storefronts.

It's unfortunate, but a reality. At it's height, Buffalo had a population of a little over half a million. Today it's probably about half that. The median income for a family is $30,000. A quarter of the population lives below the poverty line.

The city is trying to recover from it's huge downturn, but the process is slow.

WTF indeed.

Certain parts do, namely the East Side. Many parts of Buffalo are really nice, like by Delaware park near the Buffalo State University.

It's one of the more beautiful cities in America I've been to in terms of architecture and urban planning. Alas, the economy, as nightbird pointed out, has long been in a slump, and is still recovering.

As I understand, Buffalo has been slowing going downhill since its peak in 1901 with plateau periods so its not that noticebale untill recently

Lots of truth in that.. City Hall is beautiful, and there are lots of classic examples of architecture to be found (the BCT being the prime exaple, in my opinion).

A slump so bad, in fact, that my wife and I are beginning to plan a move out of the state. It's sad - I love my house, a beautiful 120 year old structure with gorgeous woodwork and oak floors - but when your IT degree isn't pulling half what it could in other areas...

In any event, allow me to give you a first person anecdote about what is wrong with the city of Buffalo: I was a contractor at National Fuel for about a year, and I worked there during the time that they moved from downtown Buffalo all the way out to Williamsville. National Fuel attempted to work with the city to achieve tax breaks, incentives, et al to prevent the move, but the city wouldn't budge. As a result, all of the revenue that a workforce of over 500 people provide each day to an area now gets spread about in the Depew region, and there is yet another empty high-rise in Buffalo.

The leadership is sorely lacking, but frankly, one wonders if anything could turn Buffalo around now that steel has moved overseas (like everything else).

Well, sure. It depends what you consider a plateau versus progress, of course. And also it depends on what area you're specifically referring to.

Either way, Buffalo would have been cool to live in at the turn of the century.

It might slowly decay into a little more than a lorn city once fabled for its promising future.

Times have changed since the uncanny optimism of the 50's. Give a place like Buffalo a lot of credit for surviving this long. Other cities falling apart seems inevitable in a Wal Mart economy.

Yes, that way any moron with a disposable camera can get himself arrested and bring an unwanted spotlight to what we do. That'd be sweet.

Leave only footprints, take only pictures... unless its like really cool.
