|  | | | I was wondering if it was possible to get an approximate age of a stalactite from its length or base girth. I'm sure there are plenty of varying factors like climate, amount of water exposure, mineral type and count, etc, but I was curious how long it takes for one to form.
This is the one that sparked my curiosity... I was surprised at it's length. It's in a hospital ward, dunno when it closed down. Sorry for the crappy pic.

| | | | Straw cave stalactites normally grow 1/4 inch a year. But if it's not a cave then depends on environment. Not sure from the pic how big it is ...but I say. 40-60 years.

I think that the water dripping here had lots of deposits (possibly sewage related, eew). There was even stalagmites forming on the floor. When we were down there the water was not dripping.

It could have some other chemical that forms quicker.. but here's a pic of some trees growing through a bench on the property, which I guess would help determine how long the place has been disused if you knew about tree growth. From this, it probably hasn't been too recent.

Many real deep cave stalactites are more then 1000-5000 year old. Over there straw stalactites form even slower 1/7 inch a year. A Frost stalactites are even slower 1/12 inc a year. But that for pure calcium. Less lower caves have a salt as well as calcium. Those stalactites form a little bit faster. 1/4 inch a year. Surface stalactites are more biological. They form..well actually build by bacteria(Same idea as coral) from all kinds of sh7t....acid..sewage.. salt..calcium...rust...oil..fuel..radioactive waist..name it . Those ones are not that old. Depends on environment of cuz. But if we take corals for example...they form 4" a year....so the the truth is somewhere between

If you see it under microscope you'll take a shower 5 times a day for a next few months. But well why we have immune system for They grow as fast as surroundings allows them to grow. (Temperature, water, air. a lot of water will not make a big difference in grow process. It's a mater of bacteria multiplying process) One it grows to some extend older bacteria start to die out and that area turns to solid thing. That big one on photo. About 20 years old. Don't mistake those things as being real stalactites. Real stalactites are form of chemical process, rock formation. Those ones are form of biological process.
P.S kowalski: Thats what I call great photographer Even on photo it's not that pleasant..I say it's just disgusting)
