| | | Does a good drain ever start / end with a circular pipe (neck breaker)? The only drain experience I really have are those that I cant stand in and sometimes I am even forced to crawl. Not that I dont enjoy it, I just think it would be cooler in a drain with different structures. Im probally just looking in the wrong places.

| | | Maybe not where you live... Lot's of times, drains will change in shape, size. I'd say it's always worth checking out though

| | | This low outfall led to some interesting corrugated pipe and overflow stacks. The 5' outfall was even lower due the the silt and rock on the floor. Note that 3 5'x10' culverts are fed by a single but taller pipe. Something to look for. BTW, I saw the risers first then looked and looked for a suitable entrance.

| | | There's a drain here that starts as three side-by-side low concrete rectangles, maybe 4.5', then they merge into a pair of 6' concrete rectangles a short way in. If it's an infall, then you can expect it to grow, if an outfall, expect it to shrink. There are exceptions to this rule; if the outfall is a low wide pipe, a tall narrow pipe can hold just as much water so it will sometimes grow in height as you push upstream.

Yeah, it's definitely NOT something to be taken lightly. Especially when part of the drain you're exploring is crawl height.

Ah ha! I've seen structures like these and figured they might be drain related, but wasn't sure... It's helpful to know what they are called, I see you've posted about this location to another thread. Now I will have to investigate the ones in my area!

although that rule probably holds truth 9 out of 10 times, I know of at least a couple drains around here that start out as 3 FT RCP at the outfall and a short ways in, will grow much larger in size.

| | | Find drains near railroad tracks... they usually have dumpy openings but cool insides. For example, this five foot box:

| | | That might have been an open canal that was later arched over. You can see similar construction in the Atlantic Avenue tunnel in Brooklyn.

| | | There is a series of huge drains at a location that we used to drive off road vehicles at. The opening was rectangular in shape and massive. We used to drive Jeep Cheerokees all the way through them. They ran underneath the interstate and were probably about 300 - 400 yards long each. The coolest thing is you could actually hear the cars driving overhead. There nothing like driving at 40 MPH though a semi flooded underground tunnel. Was there room to turn around in them, or did you just have to drive out in reverse?

You Drive all the way through and come out on the other side of the interstate. then you can turn around and go back the other way. If you have to abort in the middle you would have to back out
