The Benefits of Progress?

A lot of times I hear how progress claims the life of another building and before going to university and having access to limitless amount of historical and economic documents I thought that progress was the worst thing for U.E. Then after analyzing documents I came to the conclusion that for Winnipeg and Manitoba in general, progress is what made U.E. what it is today. If economics had not progressed than Ogilive, Masterfeeds Mill, the Union Stock Yards, the Royal Bank Tower, Henry St. Incinerator, CIL Explosives, Ready Made Foods and most of the houses I've explored would still be inhabited and most likely, unable to explore. Progress is a catch 22 in Winnipeg as it produces yet claims abandoned buildings so its hard for me to take a real solid place on where I stand on progress but ultimately, it will be the 700 or so abandoned buildings that will form my final opinion.

double edged sword. the old wont be abandoned for the new, if the new stops taking over. but sadly, the new is infiltrating the old and so our abandoned buildings are becoming fewer and farther between.
my area used to be a veritable plethora of abandoned mills, factories, hospitals and schools. in just the past five years they've all filled up. the last empty factory in town just became "north berwick paintball" of all things. and they're taking over so fast! what's on the books for exploration on saturday, is off the books by wednesday because it's suddenly being renovated.
what we reconned one night and found delightfully ruined is no longer abandoned when we get together to go in.
we have to go further and further, drive longer and longer, hunt much more thoroughly, to find things to explore...and sometimes it turns out to be nothing but some derelict old house that turned out to be better than nothing...
that's when you hear chants of "stop it! stop renewing! stop now! leave my empty places alone."
but todays creations are indeed tomorrows explorations. and todays renovated asylum will clear the way for tomorrows abandoned cottage complex, so....
definitely a dual deal.
definitely sure that i'm not sure.

While in many cases this is true that progress is good for UE overall, the shortsighted view is that this is not necesarily the case. The reason I say that is because much of what they are now destroying is old mills, and hospitals and the larger more elaborate structures like them. Unfortunately what these are being replaced with are big box stores (Walmart sucks!) and condominiums and other semi-boring places. None of which are even remotely as interesting to explore.

So yes, looking long term progess is not such a bad thing to our hobby, but I want more to explore now.

I remember seeing pics of the Bronx when the large projects area was abandoned.. even though the apartments were so large, it wasn't very interesting at all because they look like every building constructed post 1950 - big brown rectangles. Not much compares to the intricate and appealing architecture from back in the day, when people didn't cut corners, and also gave a shit about the asthetics of thier new man-made environment. I used to think preservationists were nuts, but now I understand why they care. You could probably find hundreds of works of art of the first bridge to NYC, the Brooklyn Bridge.. but why not any of the other 10 or so major NYC bridges? Cause they're newer designs and most of them look like crap. 8]

that's the deal, innit. there's no sense of art, or of craft in the new things people construct. they look corrupt and ugly when they're brand new. and they wont be there 100 years from now, like some of the asylums are, because they aren't built to those standards. those things were meant to stand forever, things now seem to be built to decay. they're cheaply conceived, cheaply designed, cheaply constructed and they fall apart long before they've aquired anything remotely resembling a history.

and yet we'll go on knocking the old things down to make way for the new, and soon we'll have a generation of people who, unless they stumble upon someones old pictures (or one of our websites hehe) wont even know those old places existed.

every time someone yapps at me that i'm trespassing i tell them that i'm in fact providing a service to the future generations of human beings. i'm documenting something that otherwise would be unknown.

eh. it sounds good
