| | | Here is the piece of information in which I read about the four tunnel boring machines. This can be found on http://www.hep.net...tory/sscnews/oct93 It is the history of the SSC link then go to SSC news. This is the October 1993 issue. I dont fully understand what all the N40 and N35 stuff means. If those are coordinates why dont they list the East/West or the minutes. Can someone shed some light on this. I think this and other similar news articles may help shed some light on what we want to know--that is where the tunnel construction took place. Perhaps we could construct a makeshift map of our own with this information, that is if this information is reliable.
SSC NEWS An electronic mail newsletter about the Superconducting Super Collider Volume 4, No. 10 October 1993 ______________________________________________________________________________ TUNNEL BREAKTHROUGH On September 15, the fourth and last SSC tunnel boring machine (TBM) in action, this one under contract for mining the tunnel segment in the north arc from N25 to N40 (5.4 miles through Austin Chalk), broke into the adit (tunnel extension) of the shafts at N35. It broke through precisely on target--well within an inch of the bullseye. Since then, the TBM has continued 635 feet past the adit, far enough for the 300-ft-long TBM to clear the shaft area. Meanwhile, the contractor is bringing up the "muck" conveyor system and other gear from N30 to N35. The total length of tunnel completed to date is 77,548 feet (14.69 miles), representing 27.1 per cent of the basic tunnel contract. Two of the TBMs are currently being relocated to service areas in the south arc of the SSC ring; one, in fact, is now being refurbished at its new jumping-off location at S40. The earliest we can expect resumption of tunneling is after the Congressional vote and receipt of further funding.

| | | Good info. "The earliest we can expect resumption of tunneling is after the Congressional vote and receipt of further funding." As I understand it, this is when they didn't get their funding.

| | | Anyone have speculation about the significance of having four tunnel boring machines? Also, does anyone know what they mean by N35, N40, N30, N25, and S40? Where are those places or what do they mean?

| | | One of the books i found at the main site is titled n15 cooling tower system. Ellis countys website has high res satellite pics of the whole area!!!! i just found it last night. In the ariel pic of the site away from the main bulding theres a huge concrete road behing it. Theres a dirt road behind the concrete that follows the tunnel for a few hundred yards. I went down it and thered 2 caps. but theres some instrument or something in them. no vent or escape hatch. [last edit 6/19/2006 10:36 PM by generic0 - edited 1 times]

| | | I'm starting to think each N was a site of some sort. This link talks about N15 a little bit. http://www.hep.net...rell/apendixa.html

| | | What is in the book? Does it explain what the cooling tower system is? Where are those towers (are they the Buena Vista towers?) What the heck does all this N15 and N40 stuff mean?

| | | Shot in the dark here, but the 'N' may stand for 'North'. I have seen additional locations labeled 'S', which may mean 'South'. "Starting on the west side, the north arc includes service areas N15 through N55, and the south arc continues around from the east side with S15 through S55. Between the north and south arcs are straight sections about 5 miles long." The East Complex (over by Palmer), should be N40 - N55. This is the area that intrigues me the most.

Ive stayed out of this mess but jeez louise there is a whole world of info out there, why ya need to be spoon fed every little piece of info. It took me longer to convert it to a JPEG resize it etc .. than anything else!

| | | Thanks for the information Arch. I have looked up some stuff outside this thread (see SSC news article above that mentions the use of four TBM's, which is something many people did not know about). However, you can save us the lectures about researching on your own. Your starting to sound like 2x. I thought we got past all of that. There is a lot of information out there to dig through, much of which is redundant or filled with details about the science behind smashing atoms or lack of funding and/or political support. I dont know about you, but I rather enjoy short cuts, sharing knowledge, and helping others out. I dont know, it just makes me feel good to do an easy favor for someone. If you dont like what we are doing here then you dont have to bother posting anything. I appreciate your input, but save the nagging. If you know something interesting and want to share it then do so. But please dont just come on here to boast about knowing something if you have no intention of telling what you know. What is the point of that? Unless it somehow makes you feel privileged and smarter than others, which gives some type of boost to your ego.
