| | | | Bird alarm? < on 11/2/2003 3:17 AM >
| | | I was scouting a building tonight, and as I walked into the parking garage, what sounded like an alarm went off. It lasted about 5 seconds and sounded strangly like a bird call. I continued to look around, as security was apparently not on its way, and the thing kept going off about every 30 seconds. I also saw some very small speakers where I think the sound was coming from. Thinking about it now, I'm almost sure it wasn't an alarm, but maybe a device used to keep pigeons away. Maybe the sounds it was making was some call of a pigeon predator like a hawk to keep the pigeons out of the garage. Has anyone else ever seen/heard of anything like this?

| | | I've actually heard of such a thing, but never encountered one before. I didn't know they were actually used...

| | | The city tried putting fake plastic owls on top of buildings around here to scare the pigeons away. It worked for about a week, until all the pigeons figured out the owls weren't real. They then proceeded to roost and crap all over the owls. I'd imagine that thing would be about as effective. [last edit 11/2/2003 5:13 AM by Servo - edited 1 times]

| | | I was scared by those things at first too! They come from speakers pointed at the sky in my experience. I see them used a lot along with "pidgeon spikes" so the birds cant roost without being poked.

| | | I've never seen one of the bird alarm things in use, but building-management folks sure like to put those anti-pigeon spikes in the oddest places... and they're not very effective, either: there are several on the skyway tunnels in Saint Paul that have actual pigeon nests built right on top of them. Doh.
