|  | | | a certain new england hospital has recently been purchased to have the grounds turned into an amusement park, much to my dismay since it is one of my playgrounds.
a reader who saw my website emailed me after exploring the facility saying...
"I couldn't get into alot of the buildings from the utility tunnels because they were doing asbestos abatement work in several locations in the tunnels. I actually almost ran right into two workers. I turned the corner in one of the tunnels and right on the other side of a plastic sheet were two guys cleaning the asbestos off pipes; they didn't see me. "
would there be any reason for them to be doing this if the buildings are going to be torn down? i'm not doubting the email, he is totally legit, i'm just wondering since these buildings are going to be history, why would they bother?

|  | | | Yes, in Canada for sure (and the USA I believe as well) the regulations for demolition say that any place with asbestos has to be cleaned out properly before they can be torn down. Thats one reason a lot of these places are still standing. Asbestos removal is very costly, so often the owners just leave them standing instead of having to shell out the big bucks for the removal process.

Demolition creates a whole lot of dust. Any harmful materials (lead/asbestos/whatever) will be carried in that dust and would drastically increase the amount that the average worker was exposed to (versus a building that had been previously abated). The dust would also escape from the demo. site and contaminate sorrounding areas that may or may not have heavy pedestrian traffic.
It's just a step taken to try and limit exposure.
