| | Belle Plains, Tx < on 5/30/2006 4:55 PM >
| | | One of the most promising towns in West Texas during the 1870s was Belle Plain. The town experienced slow growth with only three businesses operating during its first year, which was 1876. By 1880, however, the population had increased to around three hundred and supported a hotel, several mercantile stores and a newspaper among a number of other businesses. The college flourished as well as the town for a few years until the severe drought of 1886-1887 from which neither could recover. The school closed its doors in 1892. By 1897, only four families inhabited the town. Today, Belle Plain is a true ghost town. It leaves the remains of the college building and a residence or two, both of which have suffered greatly from the elements. Belle Plain is located only about a mile east of U.S. Highway 283 about six and a half miles south of Baird, but reaching the site requires a circuitous route on graded country roads. Has anyone ever been to this place? There is a sign on Hwy 283 pointing to the cemetary I but never found it.
I figured out what's wrong with life: It's other people. |

What is the deal with the purple stripes anyway? I see these periodically in Texas.
I have changed my personal exploring ethics code. From now on it will be: "Take only aimed shots, leave only hobo corpses." Copper scrappers, meth heads and homeless beware. The Jonsered cometh among you, bringing fear and dread. |

the intent was to allow landowners to make a permanent mark every so many feet without having to buy signs if they have a lot of fence its a prereq' if you will to using deadly force and allegedly its bilingual only problem is 99% of people dont know what it means! bad legislation I think.

So I wasn't in the right place, even though there was a sign pointing to the cemetary?
