There are some coal mines in Thurber, TX that were closed in the early 1900's due to the oil boom down the road in Ranger. All that remains now is a tall smokestack and a restaurant. This can clearly be seen and accessed from interstate 20. It is halfway between Fort Worth and Abilene. Are those underground mines still there? If so, where can they be accessed? Has anyone explored them?

yes

Well, that was short and sweet. Which question are you answering yes to? "are the mines still there" or "has anyone explored them" or both? I had to do custody exchanges for my oldest son with his mom there for about two years and I always wondered about the mines and thought they were neat. There is also a big castle on a hill near there but I think it is an active hunting lodge or something.

The castle on the hill is indeed a hunting lodge, and security is pretty tight. If you are ever interested in looking at the old cemetery, you can get a key to the gate at the Smokestack Restaurant on the northern side of I20.

I don't know about the coal mines... I'd think going down a tunnel like that would be very, very dangerous. But I'm chicken.

Coal mines tend to be partially or completely filled with dangerous gasses, some highly explosive, some merely poisonous. Bad idea man.

I have changed my personal exploring ethics code. From now on it will be: "Take only aimed shots, leave only hobo corpses." Copper scrappers, meth heads and homeless beware. The Jonsered cometh among you, bringing fear and dread.

Well, I think just taking pictures of and exploring briefly inside the entrance area would be really neat--that is if the entrance area can be discovered. There are also a couple of old empty buildings near the smokestack restaurant that look like they store a bunch of junk.

My understanding is that most, if not all, of the coal mines were filled in or otherwise sealed off. I'll do a bit of investigation and see what I can come up with though.

SilentSearch, you interesting in making a daytrip out there? I have Monday off.

I think there's a Geocache at the base of the Smokestack there, too.
Not that I'm in to that sort of thing...

Thanks for the offer.
I am currently without a testosterone sack (boyfriend) and that is a GOOD thing.
I like a lot less drama and he liked to throw things so he had to be eliminated.
(From my life; not his...)
Can I PM you?
